A growing number of employers are recognizing what career education leaders have been saying for years: America's workforce challenges won't be solved without a stronger pipeline of skilled trades professionals.

Career colleges and trade schools are uniquely positioned to meet this need by providing hands-on training, industry-aligned curriculum, and direct pathways to employment. As employers increase their investments in workforce development, partnerships between industry and career education institutions will be more important than ever.

A recent Wall Street Journal article highlights how major companies and foundations are investing millions of dollars to recruit, train, and support the next generation of technicians, electricians, mechanics, and other essential workers. With labor shortages continuing across critical industries, the demand for skilled talent has never been greater.

Meta announced the largest private-sector commitment to the skilled trades with a job guarantee in U.S. history in its latest initiative launch this week. This investment is another powerful signal that the demand for electricians, HVAC technicians, welders, construction professionals, and other skilled trades workers continues to grow.

But the workforce challenge is simply too large to be solved by any one initiative alone.

Career colleges and trade schools remain an essential part of the solution. Every day, these institutions provide hands-on training, industry-aligned curriculum, and accelerated pathways that prepare students for in-demand careers and help employers fill critical workforce gaps.

The skilled trades are no longer an alternative pathway—they are a cornerstone of America's economic future.

The skilled trades are not just for rewarding careers, but for entrepreneurship, personal branding, and business growth.

A recent profile highlighted a young home builder who started working construction in high school and built a trade business generating more than $200,000 annually along with a substantial online following. He now shares his work and expertise with nearly 500,000 YouTube subscribers and more than 150,000 Instagram followers.

His story is a reminder that today's skilled trades professionals aren't just building homes, repairing equipment, or wiring buildings—they're building businesses, brands, and communities.

This offers yet another reason you won't want to miss the opening session at the Career Education Convention in Cleveland, where Ty Pennington and others will discuss the growing opportunities available in the trades and how social media, entrepreneurship, and hands-on skills are creating new pathways to success.

June 5 is National Start Over Day.
More students transfer in to for-profit colleges (11.3%) than public (7.3%) or nonprofit (7.7%) colleges. These institutions give students a chance to start over on a new educational journey if other options didn’t work for them.

How Career Schools Can Use AI Today

While students and employers both wrangle with the best ways to use artificial intelligence in an evolving workforce, career colleges are well positioned to leverage the technology to better prepare students for today’s labor market and streamline how the colleges themselves operate.

Today’s guest is Lauri Kien Kotcher, the CEO & Co-founder of Different Day. Lauri tells host Jason Altmire that AI tools can be critical in providing timely replies to student inquiries, streamlining transcript processing and offering personalized communication to keep students engaged and interested in events on campus. She says these tools can even make inroads on reducing student attrition and become a key strategy for creating and cultivating the next generation of career education professionals.
