Over the past two weeks, the members of the Fort Myers Beach Fire District have been hard at work continuing our mission of training, preparation, and professional development across every division of the department.

From emergency response operations to hands-on company training, our personnel have stayed focused on building a high-performance culture that directly benefits the residents and visitors of Fort Myers Beach.

Highlights from the past 2 weeks include:
1. Launch of a department-wide hand tool maintenance program to improve equipment readiness and operational reliability.
2. Our new Skydio X10 drone has officially been placed into service from Station 31, expanding our capabilities in incident assessment, search operations, situational awareness, and public safety support.
3. Implementation of updated order-of-arrival procedures for structure fire responses to improve command coordination, accountability, and operational efficiency on emergency scenes.
4. Our EMS Director conducted respiratory emergency training in preparation for the deployment of new ventilators that will soon be carried on our Rescue Units.
5. Crews completed pre-hurricane tactical walk-throughs of target hazards throughout the district as part of ongoing storm readiness and resiliency planning.
6. Our in-house Officer & Professional Development program delivered two new leadership-focused topics aimed at continuing the growth and development of our company officers.
7. Members logged more than 400 hours of company-level training over the past two weeks, including residential primary search operations, tactical drills, and self-initiated training evolutions. One example included a nighttime roof rescue evolution conducted by Company 31 on B-Shift, reinforcing technical skills, teamwork, and operational readiness after hours.

And while all of this has been taking place… we also welcomed 8 new firefighters who officially started our in-house academy yesterday!

We recently learned of the passing of an amazing individual who responded to help our community in our time of need. Our hearts are heavy as we share the news of the passing of Rusty Schoultz. Rusty responded, along with a number of others, with the Louisiana Incident Management Team to assist Fort Myers Beach in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. We are forever grateful for his kindness, his leadership, and his selflessness in the days following the storm. The Fort Myers Beach Fire District extends our deepest sympathies to Rusty’s family and friends.

Some more pictures from live fire training on defensive strategy tactics utilizing the tower ladder basket of Truck Co. 31.

Your Fort Myers Beach firefighters had the opportunity to try different tools and equipment for removing hurricane glass at a height. They determined what they would prefer to use when tasked with preparing the building for master stream use during fire attack.

Fire department ladder trucks are not always used for reaching tall buildings.

One proven tactic is to utilize their master stream nozzles at low angles to attack large volumes of fire inside of buildings. They can deliver 1,000 gallons of water per minute- far more than hoses traditionally used by firefighters inside of a building fire.

Here, Fort Myers Beach Firefighters trained on operating from the tower ladder basket of Truck 31 to knock down real fires and remove hurricane windows using power saws on upper floors.

Last week, FMBFD conducted live fire training in an acquired structure on Miramar Street donated by Bob and Lori Lund. Over 3 days, more than 40 of our members experienced high heat and low visibility in a realistic environment created within the building. It was an outstanding opportunity to hone our craft of saving lives and protecting property at the professional level.

The drills would not have been possible without the members who were performing them. Here are a few great shots from some of our photographers who stopped by: Isaiah, Ryan Mosher, and FMBFD retired charter member Andy Fredlund.

If you have a building that will be torn down that we could use for similar fire training exercises, please reach out to us at 239-590-4210.

It’s beautiful weather today for the beach, but it’s over 800° inside of our training building at 71 Miramar Street. Your firefighters have been conducting controlled live fire training there this week thanks to the generous donation of Bob and Lori Lund who will be tearing down this property on Monday.
