Matt Caldwell is a true champion for Florida and its natural beauty, and we are blessed to have him serve our residents in Lee County!
Board Member Spotlight ✨
Meet Matt Caldwell, a seventh-generation Floridian whose roots in this state run just as deep as his passion for protecting it.
Matt joined the Florida State Parks Foundation Board of Directors in 2022 and was installed as Board President in October 2025. A Fort Myers native whose family first settled in Florida in 1826, Matt brings a rare and powerful blend of perspective to the Foundation’s work.
As a former Florida State Representative, Matt offers valuable insight into the legislative process and advocacy efforts at the Capitol. In his current role as Lee County Property Appraiser, he brings expert knowledge of Florida’s complex land management landscape. And as a lifelong Floridian, his connection to these places is personal.
Matt enjoys working closely with Florida State Park Service staff and volunteers, and is especially passionate about ensuring the Foundation can step in to support the “extra” projects—those enhancements that elevate visitor experience, accessibility, and preservation across the park system.
He believes state parks are the gateway—the place where most Floridians and visitors experience the state’s natural resources for the first time, and where connections to the broader Florida Wildlife Corridor begin. His favorite Foundation work to date includes the reconstruction of Fort Mose, along with meaningful accessibility improvements that make parks more welcoming for all.
When it comes to favorite parks, Matt’s heart is close to home, especially Cayo Costa, Lovers Key, Mound Key, and Koreshan, where family picnics, childhood adventures, and memorable camping trips helped shape his love for the outdoors.
We’re grateful for Matt’s leadership, dedication, and deep Florida roots, and for all of our incredible board members who help protect and elevate Florida State Parks every single day.
