Estuaries may just look like a stretch of shallow water, mangroves and mudflats, but they are some of the busiest habitats in our coastal ecosystem.

Their calm, nutrient-rich waters provide food and shelter for young fish, shrimp and other wildlife, while the surrounding habitats offer important places for birds, manatees and countless other species to feed and rest.

Here in Lee County, several Conservation 20/20 preserves protect important estuarine habitats. Celebrate National Estuaries Week by visiting one of our preserves!

Florida snapping turtles may look like slow-moving creatures, but they have some impressive adaptations that help them survive! 🐢

Florida snapping turtles can reach their long necks back over their own shell and snap halfway down the top of their shell, known as the carapace!

This impressive flexibility helps them defend themselves when they feel threatened.
