SNAP BENEFITS UPDATE — JUNE 2026

Important SNAP changes are now taking effect across the country.

Beginning June 1, many states are implementing expanded work requirements for certain adults receiving SNAP benefits. Some recipients between ages 18–64 who do not qualify for exemptions may now be required to work, participate in job training, volunteer, or complete approved employment activities to maintain eligibility.

Exemptions may still apply for:
✔ Older adults
✔ Individuals with disabilities
✔ Caregivers of young children
✔ Certain students and other qualifying groups

State SNAP programs may also have additional rules, requirements, and benefit changes.

FLORIDA SNAP UPDATE

Florida has implemented new food purchase restrictions under SNAP. EBT benefits can no longer be used to purchase:

❌ Soda (including diet and zero-sugar sodas)
❌ Energy drinks
❌ Candy
❌ Certain ultra-processed packaged desserts

SNAP benefits can still be used for:
✔ Fruits and vegetables
✔ Meat, poultry, and fish
✔ Dairy products
✔ Bread, rice, cereal, and pasta
✔ Healthy grocery staples
✔ Seeds and plants that produce food

If you currently receive SNAP or are thinking about applying, make sure you understand the latest eligibility requirements and state-specific program updates.

Providence Family Life Center is committed to helping individuals and families by providing education, connection to resources, navigating benefit programs, and accessing community support.

Movement doesn’t have to be intense to be effective.

Slow, intentional movement—like walking, stretching, or restorative yoga—can help release tension and support nervous system regulation.

It’s not about doing more.
It’s about doing what supports your body.

That’s our philosophy at The Mind Body Movement Living Laboratory www.mbmll.live

Exciting News from Providence Family Life Center and the Mind Body Movement Living Laboratory!

We are honored to announce that Providence Family Life Center is now an official Field Education Site for the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Marieb College of Health and Science!

This partnership reflects our commitment to supporting the next generation of professionals through trauma-informed, community-centered learning experiences that connect education, wellness, advocacy, and real-world impact.

We are excited to support students by providing opportunities for hands-on learning, community engagement, wellness programming, and interdisciplinary collaboration that promotes whole-person health and resilience.

At PFLC, we believe healing and resilience happen through connection, compassion, movement, and community.

We look forward to collaborating with FGCU as we continue building healthier, stronger communities across Southwest Florida. 💚

Disease Prevention Awareness - Hantavirus

Hantavirus can infect humans when they inhale airborne particles from the droppings of certain rats and mice. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), it only rarely spreads from person to person. The infection can cause a rare but serious illness called hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS).

Early symptoms are flulike, including fever, chills, body aches and headaches. As the illness progresses, it can cause shortness of breath and, in severe instances, lung or heart failure. There is no specific treatment for the virus, but symptoms can be treated with intubation, oxygen therapy, fluid replacement and medication, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cruise ships are a prime spot for infections to spread.

The virus spread by rodents is also believed to have sickened three others, the World Health Organization says

Mental health awareness is not just about thoughts—it’s about how the body processes stress.

When stress becomes chronic, the nervous system can stay in a heightened state, making it harder to rest, focus, or feel at ease.

Awareness is the first step.

Small, consistent practices can support regulation over time.
Start with a "pause." Ask your self, "How do I really feel?

Do you feel like you’re always on?

Always thinking.
Always doing.
Struggling to fully rest.

This can be a sign your nervous system is in
fight-or-flight mode.

When stress becomes chronic,
the body forgets how to fully relax.

Awareness is the first step toward change.

April is Stress Awareness Month—

At Providence Family Life Center and the Mind Body Movement Living Laboratory, we understand that stress is a physiological response—not a personal failure.
When we learn how the body responds to stress, we gain the ability to regulate it.
but stress is not just something we “feel.”
Stress is not just something we “feel.”

It is something the body carries.
Tight shoulders.
Fatigue.
Difficulty sleeping.
These are not random symptoms.
They are signals.
Your nervous system is responding to what it perceives as stress.
The goal isn’t to ignore these signals—
it’s to understand them.
