Back-to-School Safety Starts with a Conversation!
Our Outreach Team has been busy getting ready for the new school year!
We’ve had the opportunity to join Source Of Light & Hope Development Center, Colonial Elementary School, Kingsway Elementary, and Moore Haven Middle-High School for back-to-school nights and open houses.
We loved connecting with families, sharing resources, and reminding parents that school safety goes beyond what happens inside the classroom. We shared information about online and personal safety, identifying safe adults, healthy boundaries, and ways families can keep the conversation going at home.
As the new school year begins, here are a few simple conversations every family can have:
• Help your child identify safe adults. Talk about 3 or more adults they can go to if they feel scared, uncomfortable, confused, or need help.
• Talk about healthy boundaries. Remind children that they can say no to unwanted touch, should never be asked to keep unsafe secrets, and can always tell you when something doesn’t feel right.
• Make digital safety part of everyday conversations. Talk about who your child communicates with online and remind them to tell a trusted adult if someone asks them to move a conversation to a private app or keep it secret.
• Ask specific questions. Instead of simply asking, “How was school?” try, “What was the best part of your day?” or “Did anyone ask you to keep a secret?”
• Remind them they can always come to you. Let your child know they will be listened to, supported, and believed when they speak up, even if they’ve made a mistake.
Safety is built through small, everyday conversations that help children feel safe, confident, and empowered to speak up.
