The Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office is attempting to identify the driver of the vehicle pictured below in relation to a Criminal Mischief/Desecration of a Grave case. This incident occurred on 8/31/2026 at approximately 5:30 pm at Marvin Church Cemetery at the address of 22 CR-384 in Crossville, near the intersection of HWY 68 and CR-384. The incident resulted in heavy damage to multiple family grave markers and gravesites. The vehicle appears to be a dark in color 2011-2019 Chevrolet Cruze and should have damage to the drivers side front fender and bumper.

Today, Sheriff Nick Welden was honored to speak at an End Addiction event recognizing National Recovery Month. Addiction affects individuals, families, and our entire community, but recovery is possible.

Together, we can continue to raise awareness, support those in recovery, and remind those struggling that there is hope and it’s never too late to start again.

On August 12th, 2026, the Dekalb County Drugs and Major Crimes Unit was contacted by members of the Dekalb County Commission along with the County Administrator and asked to open a case in regards to a 1976 John Deere 4230 tractor that was missing from the Dekalb County Road Department.

In response to the situation involving Fort Payne City Schools, all schools have been cleared and are no longer under lockdown. Students and staff are safe, and normal school operations resumed.

We had another busy weekend here at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office!

Our deputies answered 72 calls for service over the weekend, 37 calls on Saturday and 35 calls on Sunday.

Calls for service included domestic violence, traffic stops, extra patrols, assisting motorists, noise complaints, welfare checks, and many other requests for assistance.

While some calls may seem routine, every call is important and we never know what that next call may bring. We are so grateful for our Deputies who continue to work 24/7 when most of us are enjoying time with our family and friends, they are the ones responding to these calls and keeping our loved ones safe.

Sheriff Nick Welden and the DCSO would like to wish all students, teachers , school staff, parents and SRO’s a safe and successful school year!

As everyone heads out to school please leave home a few minutes early and allow yourself extra time to get to where you are going during morning and afternoon commutes. Slow down and stay alert in school zones, stay off your phones, watch for school buses and children crossing the streets at bus stops, young, new and inexperienced drivers and always STOP for school buses when required to do so.

To all the students - enjoy this chapter in your life and remember you can do anything you set your mind to. Dream big and never stop believing in yourself. Always choose kindness because your words and actions matter and every choice you make has consequences, so choose wisely. Do what’s right, even when no one is watching and one day you will look back and be proud of the choices that helped shape the person you became.

We just wanted to warn residents about a jury duty scam that has recirculated.

Scammers are calling people claiming they missed jury duty and demanding immediate payment to avoid arrest. They may even use the names of real law enforcement officers or court officials to sound convincing, but it is a SCAM.

The Sheriff’s Office and the court will NEVER EVER call and demand payment over the phone or ask you to pay using gift cards, cryptocurrency, or payment apps.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up, don’t send money, and never give out personal or financial information. If you’re not sure if the call is legit, please contact our office at 256-845-3801.

On Tuesday, August 4th, 2026, the Dekalb County Drugs and Major Crimes Unit executed two search warrants at separate residences in the Grove Oak community which resulted in a trafficking amount of methamphetamine, ma*****na, and US currency being seized.

UPDATE: Zander was found safe at 11:15 AM, 8/4/26.

MISSING JUVENILE-

Please be on the lookout for Zander Jett Nance, 16 year old male juvenile. Zander was last seen in the 1500 block of CR-261 at approximately 10pm last night. Zander has ties to the Valley Head community and may have been dropped off at or near Valley Head school this morning.
