Join FPUA as we celebrate 54 years of service as Fort Pierce's hometown utility. 🎉

Did you know FPUA was established by citizen referendum on May 30, 1972? Today, FPUA is one of only a few public utilities in the nation that provides five essential services: electric, water, wastewater, natural gas, and fiber internet.

With more than 280 employees across 29 departments we work together every day to support our mission to provide economical, reliable, and friendly service in a continuous effort to enhance the quality of life in our community. To recognize this milestone, cupcakes were delivered across our facilities as a small token of appreciation for the people who make our essential work possible.

Thank you, TeamUA, for your dedication and commitment to serving our customers and community.

New Update: Wastewater Wednesdays!

Last week, FPUA shared that the Mainland Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility received the 2025 Plant Operations Excellence Award from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), and representatives from the agency visited the facility to formally present the award and meet with FPUA staff.

This week at the Mainland Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility, startup and system optimization activities continued as the facility moves closer to full operational readiness.

Plant operations are running well, including strong solids separation from the treated effluent, an important part of maintaining reliable treatment performance and supporting water quality goals.

Teams also continue fine-tuning equipment and preparing systems for long-term operation. In addition, a new backup generator is expected to be delivered this week and is anticipated to be operational within the next few weeks to further strengthen facility resiliency and reliability.

Work is also continuing on the new booster station near North 24th Street, which will help redirect wastewater flows from the existing Master Lift Station A to the Mainland Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility once operational. The project is an important part of transitioning wastewater treatment operations to the new inland facility and strengthening long-term system resiliency.

Temporary fencing has now been installed at the site as crews prepare for upcoming construction activities expected to begin soon.

As work continues, FPUA remains focused on strengthening critical infrastructure, supporting long-term resiliency, and protecting the Indian River Lagoon.

Also, we’d like to thank all of our partners, contractors, vendors, and crew who are helping us deliver this important project to our customers! FPUA is grateful for this project with industry leaders Globaltech, Inc., Haskell and Hazen, the site designers and build team; TLC Diversified, Inc., re-routing the conveyance system to redirect wastewater flows away from the Indian River Lagoon; Kimley-Horn, the conveyance system designers, and the sub-contractors working so hard to keep this project safe and on schedule.

We are also thankful for the partnership with the City of Fort Pierce in this infrastructure improvement effort that will benefit the Fort Pierce community for generations to come.

New Update: Wastewater Wednesdays!

Last month, we shared that FPUA's Mainland Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility received the 2025 Water and Wastewater Plant Operations Excellence Award from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).

This week, FDEP representatives visited the facility to formally present the award, meet with FPUA staff, and learn more about the progress being made since operations began earlier this year.

Presented in the Type I Domestic Wastewater Facility category, the award recognizes excellence in operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance at facilities with a permitted capacity of 500,000 gallons per day or greater.

This recognition is especially meaningful as the facility continues moving into full operation. The Mainland Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility is currently receiving and treating approximately 1 million gallons of wastewater per day, representing about 20 percent of the flows that will ultimately be transitioned to the site. This progress reflects years of planning, construction, and coordination to strengthen FPUA's wastewater system for the future.

As operations continue to expand, the facility is helping advance FPUA's long-term effort to relocate wastewater treatment operations from South Hutchinson Island to a more resilient inland location. The project supports environmental protection, future water reuse opportunities, and critical infrastructure investments that will benefit the community for decades to come.

We appreciate the FDEP team for taking the time to visit Fort Pierce and present this recognition in person. Their visit provided an opportunity to highlight the progress being made at the facility and the dedication of the employees who help operate it each day.

FPUA remains committed to transparency, community engagement, and keeping the public informed as this important project continues to serve our community and shape a more resilient future.

New Update: Wastewater Wednesdays!

Last week, we shared that FPUA’s Mainland Water Reclamation Facility project continues to receive national recognition following its 2025 Utility of the Future Award in the Water Reuse category. The Water Environment Federation also featured the project in its Circular Water Economy case study series and national interactive map, recognizing FPUA’s commitment to resiliency, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.

This week, the new MWRF officially began treating approximately 20% of FPUA’s total system flows using the state-of-the-art AquaNereda® treatment process. The reactors are now active during their aeration phase, and recent panoramic views of the headworks, EQ tank, and chlorine contact chambers continue to show how far the project has come.

Crews are also continuing work on final items as the facility moves closer to final completion this summer.

On the conveyance side, crews have completed construction and pressure testing of the new 16-inch force main that will help redirect wastewater flows to the new Mainland Water Reclamation Facility as part of FPUA’s larger wastewater system improvements. Road restoration work is also complete, and North 7th Street from Avenue B to Avenue C has reopened to the public.

Also, we’d like to thank all of our partners, contractors, vendors, and crew who are helping us deliver this important project to our customers! FPUA is grateful for this project with industry leaders Globaltech, Inc., Hazkell and Hazen, the site designers and build team; TLC Diversified, Inc., re-routing the conveyance system to redirect wastewater flows away from the Indian River Lagoon; Kimley-Horn, the conveyance system designers, and the sub-contractors working so hard to keep this project safe and on schedule.

We are also thankful for the partnership with the City of Fort Pierce in this infrastructure improvement effort that will benefit the Fort Pierce community for generations to come.
