St. Lucie County’s Public Safety Department, Martin County Emergency Management Agency and Florida Power & Light Company will conduct a quarterly testing of the outdoor warning sirens for the St. Lucie nuclear power plant at noon on Thursday, June 4.

The test will involve a one-minute sounding of all 91 sirens within the 10-mile St. Lucie plant emergency planning zone. Before and after the sirens sound, a message will be broadcast on the sirens' public-address system stating, "This is only a test."

FPL and St. Lucie and Martin counties regularly test the siren system to improve public awareness of its function and ensure its operability.

In the unlikely event of an actual emergency at the St. Lucie plant, the sirens would sound for at least a five-minute period. Official instructions or information would follow on local radio and television.

Meet Liliana Acevedo, Program Associate at the Paula A. Lewis library. She has been with the County for about 3 years. "The best part of my job is creating creative solutions that produce real and tangible positive effects for the patrons of the library," Liliana said. "It's incredibly rewarding to see an idea come to life and make a tangible difference in someone's day."

What’s something unique about your position that others wouldn’t know?
A unique aspect of my role is that I led the creation of an accessibility program for the library. We introduced computers with large-format keyboards and ergonomic mice to make our resources more comfortable and accessible for everyone.

What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I channel my passion for music by promoting concerts, music events, and open mic nights throughout the county. It's a great way to stay connected to the local arts scene and help others discover new talent.

Favorite St. Lucie County Park, Preserve or Beach Access?
The Ten Mile Creek Preserve is my absolute favorite. The trails there are amazing and you can always count on seeing some incredible wildlife like the alligators and herons.

Favorite Book?
My favorite book is Parable of a Sower by Octavia E. Butler. It’s a powerful and thought-provoking story that has really stuck with me.

Dream Vacation?
My dream vacation is to travel to Vietnam. I would love the chance to explore the country's rich past and be able to learn about its culture and history.

A group of local Scouts earned their Water Badges this May during an educational visit to the South Hutchinson Island Water Reclamation Facility.

Guided by Senior Lead Operator Mano Sewel, Plant Operator Martin Flores and Water Woman, the girls got a behind-the-scenes look at how our community protects and manages one of its most important resources. They explored each step of the water cycle and followed the journey of water after it goes down the drain, learning firsthand what really happens after “the flush.”

Along the way, they learned practical ways to conserve water, protect the environment and serve as everyday stewards of a cleaner, more sustainable future.
