Old Fort Pierre School

Old Fort Pierre School Constructed in 1892, the Old Fort Pierre School was the first high school in Fort Pierre and one of the first in western South Dakota.

The two-story Old Fort Pierre School originally had four classrooms. Elementary instruction began in 1892 and a high school curriculum was added in 1901. In 1905, the first Fort Pierre High School class graduated from here. The prairie foursquare continued to function as Fort Pierre's school until 1909 when a new, brick building was constructed at the intersection of Main and 5th Streets in Fort P

ierre. At that time, 175 students were enrolled. The Old Fort Pierre School was remodeled by Elgin Brown and became Brown's Flat Boarding House. Brown extensively remodeled, expanded the attic with dormers, added a wrap-around porch and made it an 11 room boarding house. Ed and Lizzie Duffy bought the house in 1942 and it became locally known as the Duffy House, a boarding and rooming house. Ed Duffy lived in the house until 1982 when it was abandoned. John and Patti Duffy acquired the historic structure in 2002 and began remodeling and restoring it. The building has a symmetrical facade and floor plan, hipped roof, double hung windows and doorway details and cottage windows. Originally, the building had a bell tower and later a large two-story wraparound porch.

We will be in Fort Pierre/Pierre Monday through Friday this week washing windows. Our service includes a full window scrub that washes the glass and frames/trim. This results in a streak free window and removes the dirt on the trim and in the window seals. This helps keep your windows cleaner for longer. We also offer a gutter cleaning service that removes all the dirt, leaves, and sticks from your gutters. If you would like an estimate for either of these please reach out as soon as possible so we can make sure you get a spot on the schedule! (If you see a couple of college aged guys going door to door they are most likely giving out estimates!)
