Established in 1992, the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard provides a link to Fort Riley's and Kansas’ historic past. The CGMCG is made of active-duty servicemembers who travel to ceremonies and events across the country to portray federal Soldiers on the plains of Kansas during the Civil War era. They perform mounted demonstrations that exhibit the skill and precision required of a cavalry

Soldier. Troopers and horses of this unit are outfitted in period-appropriate uniforms, accoutrements and equipment. Fort Riley Soldiers, interested in joining the CGMCG?

If you are following along, yesterday we introduced Sgt Harrell. Today, we would like to introduce his mount, Sampson!

Sampson is a 7 year old sorrel mustang that comes to us from the beautiful state of Nevada! He stands 15.3 hands tall and is proudly ridden as a Tactics Demonstration Horse, as well as participating in Mounted Colors Presentations and parades. Sampson is a well trained horse that takes part in multiple events throughout the year.

Sampson is proudly sponsored by the good men and women of Irwin Army Community Hospital, and gets to make appearances for the staff and families of IACH.

Please stay tuned as we continue to introduce your Fort Riley Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard Troopers, and their horses in the coming weeks!

On this beautiful Tuesday, the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard takes pride in spotlighting Sgt Harrell through our new segment, Meet the Troopers!

Sgt Harrell, hailing from Ponca City, Oklahoma, brings over six years of experience serving in the United States Army. Since joining the team in July 2024, Sgt Harrell has been instrumental as the NCOIC of the maintenance department, primary armorer, and a Tactics Demonstration Team Rider.

Stemming from a family with extensive military service, Sgt Harrell is dedicated to serving the United States Army and the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard. Sgt Harrell advises potential recruits to embody humility and discretion, noting the importance of knowing when to be seen and heard. A highlight of his tenure includes participating in the Cheyenne Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Thank you, Sgt Harrell, for your invaluable service.
