The Overland Park Police Department recently sent our office a letter informing us about a new initiative they have adopted called the “Silent Partner Program.” Through this program, they are honoring one of our own Bourbon County Deputies, Deputy William F. Bloomfield.

As part of this meaningful tribute, one of their employees will carry a card bearing Deputy Bloomfield’s information, ensuring his memory and sacrifice continue to be remembered.

Deputy William F. Bloomfield was shot and killed in the line of duty on September 16, 1922. At the time of his death, Deputy Bloomfield was attempting to arrest a man for selling illegal liquor when an exchange of gunfire occurred. Both Deputy Bloomfield and the suspect died from the incident.

We would like to express our utmost gratitude to the Overland Park Police Department for keeping our office, Deputy Bloomfield, and his family in their thoughts through this honorable program. It is acts of remembrance like these that ensure the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers are never forgotten.

Thank you, Overland Park Police Department, for this touching tribute and for helping keep Deputy Bloomfield’s legacy alive.

This morning, members of the Sheriff’s Office had the honor of assisting at the Fort Scott National Historic Site by placing flags on the grounds for the “Symbols of Sacrifice” event in observance of Memorial Day.

Each flag serves as a powerful reminder of the courage, service, and sacrifice made by the men and women of our military. We are grateful for the opportunity to help honor those who gave so much for our country and our freedoms.

As Memorial Day approaches, we encourage our community to take a moment to remember and reflect on the true meaning of the holiday and the sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes.

UPDATE: Arrest made in Bourbon County officer-involved shooting

The KBI is identifying the suspect involved in the officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday, May 7, in Bourbon County.

George White III, 47, of Pittsburg, was arrested on Tuesday, May 12, at approximately 2:39 p.m., following his release from St. Luke’s Hospital. White was arrested on a Crawford County warrant for aggravated assault, theft of $100,000 or more, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and misdemeanor theft.

Following the arrest, White was booked into the Jackson County Detention Center in Missouri.

Anyone with information about this incident, or who believes they may be a victim, is encouraged to contact the KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME, or contact local law enforcement. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online at www.kbi.ks.gov/sar.

No further information will be released at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.

EARLIER RELEASE:
The KBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday night in Bourbon County involving deputies from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI assistance at approximately 11:40 p.m. Thursday, May 7. KBI agents responded to the scene.

Late Thursday evening, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen semi-truck traveling northbound from Pittsburg. The vehicle was reported to be driving into oncoming traffic and fleeing from local law enforcement.

Crawford County deputies pursued the vehicle after the driver refused an attempted traffic stop. During the pursuit, the suspect continued to drive the wrong way in the southbound lanes. Deputies attempted to disable the vehicle but were unsuccessful.

As the pursuit continued into Bourbon County, two Crawford County deputies discharged their fi****ms, striking the suspect and vehicle. The suspect lost control of the vehicle near Highway 69 and Indian Road and was taken into custody.

The suspect was treated at a local hospital before being transferred to a regional medical center and is now in stable condition. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings which take several weeks to complete.

The investigation remains ongoing.
