Turn around don’t drown!

When you drive into floodwaters, you’re not only putting your own life at risk, but also the lives of your rescuers. It’s far better to be late and remain safe than to take a risk and possibly lose your life. Turn Around, Don’t Drown! weather.gov/safety/flood

Please no open burning. The Grassland Fire Danger Index is extreme today, weather conditions and very low moisture content of grasses and other dry organic material on the ground, indicating that critical burning conditions exist. All fires have the potential to become large and spread quickly and become erratic with extreme fire behavioral characteristics. Difficulty of fire suppression: Direct attack on a headfire will generally fail. Back burn from a secure good line with adequate manpower and equipment. Flanks may become more difficult to control in shifting or erratic winds. Spot fires are likely.

Significant fire weather conditions are expected today. High winds and extended dry periods will produce extreme burning conditions. Open fires can quickly escape and are very difficult to control, even for experienced fire fighters.

03/13/2026

Elevated Fire Danger expected this afternoon as dry air moves into the region allowing RH values to fall into the 20 to 30% Range. Elevated Fire Danger means that weather and land conditions are favorable for erratic fire spread, if a fire does start.

Unseasonably warm temperatures in the 70s along with low humidity levels in the 20 to 25 percent range and southwest winds gusting up to 15 to 25 mph will lead to elevated to significant fire weather conditions Today. The strongest winds will be northwest of the I-44 corridor.

No Burning today!

No Burning today!

A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 12 PM to 8 PM today. A combination of gusty winds of 30-40 mph and relative humidity as low as 10-20% will create significant to extreme fire danger. Fire can spread rapidly in these conditions, so outside burning is discouraged outside of experienced fire personnel.

Firefighters rely on public awareness and prevention to keep communities safe.

💦 Prepare: Kansas is largely protected by volunteer fire departments—local responders who serve their own communities.
Support your department by:
Keeping driveways clear and properly marked
Maintaining accessible water sources
Learning local fire restrictions and emergency procedures

⛓️ Prevent: Over 90% of Kansas wildfires are human-caused.
Help reduce preventable fires by avoiding common ignition sources, especially on high or extreme fire danger days:
Dragging trailer chains
Welding or grinding
Escaped debris burns or burn piles
Grilling, fire pits, and outdoor flames
Follow all local regulations and burn restrictions—these protect firefighters as much as property.

⚠️ Respond: When a wildfire occurs:
Follow evacuation orders immediately
Give first responders room to operate
Do not re-enter restricted areas

Your cooperation allows firefighters to work safely and efficiently!
