EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT 🔦 BOYD WATERS
25 Years of Service – Fire Chief, Fort Smith Fire Department
Born and raised in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Boyd Waters once dreamed of flying jets in the Air Force. But as a young adult, family responsibilities came first. Wanting to stay close to home and support his growing family, he began working for Walmart, where he spent nearly 13 years and worked his way up from stock associate to support manager.
Boyd eventually grew curious about firefighting but wasn’t sure it was the right full-time path. That changed the moment he joined the Sallisaw Fire Department as a volunteer. “As soon as I started, I knew—this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.” Within a year, he applied and was hired by the City of Fort Smith Fire Department 🚒.
Starting as a Pipeman in 2000, Boyd worked his way steadily through the ranks: Driver (2004), Captain (2011), Battalion Chief (2013), Assistant Chief (2016), and finally Fire Chief (2023).
Now responsible for leading more than 150 employees, Boyd says the work has been incredibly fulfilling. “I love this job. It’s the greatest job ever.” He still remembers the excitement of his early years—fighting fires, training with his crew, and learning extrication techniques. “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. And that’s how it’s been for me.”
Boyd’s sense of purpose extends beyond Fort Smith. While working full-time for the Fort Smith Fire Department, he continued volunteering in Sallisaw for 22 years. His son has followed in his footsteps and now works as a driver for Fort Smith.
Over his career, Boyd has seen tremendous growth within the department and has been a key player in modernizing its equipment and vehicles. He’s particularly proud of his involvement in the design and specification process for new fire trucks, ensuring Fort Smith firefighters have the safest, most efficient tools for the job.
After 25 years of service, Boyd will retire on October 31, 2025 🎉 . He looks forward to some well-earned rest, traveling, and spending more time with his family.
Reflecting on his career, Boyd says he’s simply proud to have served. “Without the other firefighters on the job, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish anything; being a firefighter takes every one of us. At the end of the day, I just hope I did my part and left it better than I found it.”
Thank you, Chief Waters, for 25 years of dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving the Fort Smith Fire Department and our community.🤝
