35 Years of Service: Corporal Mike Burcham

This month, Corporal Mike Burcham celebrates 35 years of dedicated law enforcement service.

When Mike began his career, police reports were typed on typewriters. There were no cell phones, no mobile computers, and no instant access to information. Officers carried dimes in their pockets in case they needed to stop and use a pay phone to call the office. A simple license plate check could take five minutes or longer. Today, that same information is available in seconds.

The profession has changed dramatically over the past three and a half decades, but one thing has remained constant—Mike’s commitment to serving the people of Sebastian County.

In the early days of his career, officers were often responsible for purchasing much of their own equipment, including their firearm, holster, ammunition, and handcuffs. Despite the challenges, Mike embraced the profession and dedicated himself to helping others.

Ask Mike why he has stayed in law enforcement for 35 years, and his answer is simple: he loves Sebastian County and he loves its people.

Throughout his career, Mike has believed that law enforcement is about more than writing tickets and making arrests. As he often says, “Not everyone needs a ticket; sometimes they just need a talking to.” His approach has always been rooted in treating people with dignity, respect, and compassion.

In fact, some of the people Mike arrested years ago have later returned to thank him—not for the arrest itself, but for the kindness, respect, and fairness he showed them during one of the most difficult moments of their lives.

His compassion extends far beyond the badge. Years ago, Mike encountered a family in crisis who had no furniture in their home. Without hesitation, he gave them his own furniture. For a couple of weeks afterward, he joked that he sat on a five-gallon bucket while gradually replacing the items he had given away.

Mike’s work ethic is equally impressive. Rarely missing work, he has completed multiple years throughout his career without missing a single day. His reliability, professionalism, and dedication have made him a respected figure among coworkers and citizens alike.

Over the last 35 years, Mike has served in numerous roles, adapted to countless changes in technology and policing, and witnessed generations of growth throughout Sebastian County. Through it all, he has remained focused on one thing: helping people.

Today, Corporal Mike Burcham serves as the Sheriff’s Office Community Policing Coordinator, continuing to build relationships, solve problems, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Thank you, Corporal Burcham, for 35 years of faithful service, unwavering dedication, and for reminding us all that kindness and compassion still matter.

Congratulations on this remarkable milestone, and thank you for everything you have done for the citizens of Sebastian County. 🚔⭐️👏

Sheriff Conger, Chief Deputy Miller, and Captain Miner grilled burgers and hotdogs in the wet weather today for the staff to show their appreciation. To say they were delicious would be an understatement. The Sheriff’s wife, Kaylee Conger was even on hand to help prepare and serve. 🍔 🌭

Colonel Kevin Cox and Command Sergeant Major Eric Evan’s came to the office today to recognize Corporal Jason Young for the role he played in saving the life of one of their young soldiers a couple of weeks back. A life changing vehicle crash near Hwy. 96 and South Boundary at Chaffee resulted in the application of a tourniquet being applied. The Colonel directly attributed Corporal Young’s knowledge and abilities that day to directly saving the life of his soldier. Sheriff Conger and Chief Deputy Miller, along with Sergeant Haynes were on hand to express their gratitude to Corporal Young. Corporal Young is very humble and was embarrassed by all of the recognition, but was just happy that God placed him in such close proximity to the crash site so that his response time was minimal, allowing him to arrive on scene and stop the bleeding-which ultimately saved the soldiers life.
