Have you ever seen a tree that is a victim of a lightning strike? Lightning struck our big beautiful mesquite behind the Rollins Sibley House back in June. I’ve been watching our tree slowly leak sap and shed leaves, beans, and branches- so decided to show you in case you might be curious! Can you see the scar patterns from the strike, weeping sap from the affected limbs, and black scorching at the core of the branch I trimmed? (See the pics and read for context below.)

Context: A few weeks back there was a pretty good storm here in Fort Stockton. When I came to work the following morning I was greeted with a splintered branch in the driveway next to St. Stephens. I figured that poor mesquite had been struck, looked at the scarring and tree itself pretty close, and cleaned up the driveway. I came on up to work and didn’t think much else about it. A few days later I begin to suspect that our big tree in back had also been hit- the bark looked darker in some places, but the tree was still so bushy and green I couldn’t tell for sure at the time. One of the mistletoe bundles began to droop, and then came the sap leaking. Now, the mistletoe branch had dried out enough that it’s broken over (you can see in the pictures it’s still attached but fallen almost completely down). Every day it looks a little more rough as it goes through the dying and healing process, but I think it might pull through. I’ll need to trim back some of the damage, but mesquites are pretty resilient and hopefully she’ll heal and keep growing!
