On August 4, 2026, Pecos County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit initiated a traffic stop on a 2002 Ford F150 in Sheffield, Texas. The driver, a male residing in Garden City, Texas was found attempting to smuggle three additional undocumented citizens from Mexico into the United States. One male passenger absconded while the deputy was able to take the driver and two passengers into custody with the assistance of Terrell County Sheriff’s Office, Texas DPS, and US Border Patrol. All three subjects were transported back to US Border Patrol station for processing.

On July 28, 2026, the Big Spring Police Department and Howard County Sheriff’s Office began investigating an ongoing series of stolen vehicles, vehicle burglaries, and firearm thefts occurring in our jurisdictions. Big Spring PD then received a crucial Crime Stoppers tip that provided information about the identification of the suspect. Through further investigation and the use of Flock ALPR technology, a suspect vehicle was identified. With the assistance of the Texas Rangers, the suspect vehicle was identified as being active during the time frames of the offenses, at which time the suspect was linked to the suspect vehicle. The suspect was identified as Pecos County resident Justin Wright, 28 years old. A Pecos County (Sheffield/Iraan) Sheriff’s Deputy was also instrumental in identifying the suspect and confirmed the suspect’s recent association with the vehicle.

On July 30, 2026, authorities became aware of a similar series of vehicle burglaries, stolen vehicles, and firearm thefts in Glasscock County that matched the same modus operandi (MO). Through strong inter-agency communication and coordination among the Big Spring Police Department, Howard County Sheriff’s Office, Glasscock County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas Rangers, the suspect was positively identified and linked to numerous crimes. The suspect was located at a relative’s residence in Glasscock County and taken into custody without incident.

Investigators subsequently obtained a full confession from the suspect. The confession has corroborated and cleared 24 separate investigations spanning three jurisdictions. The cleared cases involve four stolen vehicles, six stolen fi****ms, two residential burglaries, two felony criminal mischiefs, and 15 vehicle burglaries. Multiple stolen items have since been recovered.

This successful resolution highlights the critical role of Flock ALPR technology and the value of close collaboration between numerous local agencies and the Texas Rangers in identifying and apprehending the suspect responsible for this crime spree.

This investigation remains active and ongoing. No further information is available at this time.

Man Arrested in Connection with Iraan Homicide

IRAAN, Texas — The Pecos County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of Miguel Luna, 48, of Iraan, in connection with the death of Claudia Ortiz, 47.

On July 14, 2026, Pecos County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence located at 204 East 7th Street in Iraan following a 911 call. Deputies located Ortiz inside the residence with an apparent gunshot wound. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

At the request of Sheriff T.J. Perkins, the Texas Rangers assisted with the investigation. Following the processing of the scene and investigative interviews, an arrest warrant was obtained charging Luna with murder.

Luna was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Pecos County Jail, where he is awaiting arraignment.

This remains an active investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available and as permitted by law.

The Pecos County Sheriff’s Office thanks the Texas Rangers and all assisting agencies for their cooperation and assistance.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Sergeant Kennedy faithfully served our community with professionalism, integrity, and unwavering commitment. His work alongside his K9 partner, Quatro, helped remove countless illegal narcotics from our streets and led to numerous successful investigations and cash seizures. Together, they made a lasting impact on the safety of our community.

Kelly, thank you for your loyalty, sacrifice, and dedication to the badge. Your years of service have left a legacy that will not be forgotten.
