As the weather warms up, snakes are becoming more active around the Big Bend, Cold Brook, and Cottonwood projects and recreation areas. While rattlesnakes play an important role in the environment, we want everyone to stay safe while enjoying our projects.
Rattlesnake safety tips:
1) Watch where you step, sit, and place your hands - especially around rocks, tall grass, wood piles and brushy areas
2) Wear closed-toe shoes or boots when hiking or exploring
3) Stay on marked trails and avoid reaching into places you can't clearly see
4) Keep pets close and supervised
5) If you see a rattlesnake, give it space and slowly back away - never try to touch, move, or scare it.
6) Listen for the rattle, but remember - not all rattlesnakes rattle before striking.
