Artwork based on the flag design of the Choctaw Brigade. The Cherokee, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek), Chickasaw, and Seminole were recognized by the Confederacy. The last Confederate general to surrender was Brigadier-General Stand Watie (1806-1871), who was also Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.

From General Cooper’s report after The Battle of Massard Prairie, July 27th, 1864.

I desire in closing this part of my report to pay a passing tribute to the memory of the Rev. Tiok-homma (or Red Pine, a Choctaw, known among the whites as William Cass), who fell mortally wounded while leading the advance. This brave warrior and Christian had on every occasion displayed the highest order of courage. He served as chaplain in my old regiment, and continued in the same position through every trail, and was also distinguished as a warrior in every battle in which his regiment was engaged until he received his death wound.

Did you know??? Paris, TX had a Depot/Shop that was building wagons for the Confederate Native troops and Texans operating in Indian Territory and Texas. Here is an excerpt from Pg. 9, “A People at War: East Texans during the Civil War,” by Ralph A. Wooster & Robert Wooster.

“The Confederate Field Transportation Bureau maintained wagon shops at Hempstead, Tyler, Rusk, Paris, Waco, and Mount Pleasant.”
