On the afternoon of July 17, Engine 6 responded to a reported choking emergency involving a 14-month-old child. Upon arrival, firefighters were relieved to find the toddler alert, breathing normally, and showing no signs of distress.
While assessing the child, her mother explained that her daughter had begun choking on a teething cookie.

Recognizing the danger, she immediately performed back blows, successfully clearing her daughter’s airway before Engine 6 even arrived on the scene.

When firefighters commended her quick and decisive actions, she offered a simple response: “I learned from you.”

She had recently attended one of our Fort Walton Beach Fire Department community CPR and choking emergency classes, where she learned how to recognize and manage an infant airway obstruction. Her composure under extreme pressure turned classroom training into a lifesaving reality.

In recognition of her courage and quick thinking, the Fort Walton Beach Fire Department was proud to present her with a Life Saving Award at this past Tuesday's City Council meeting!

This call is a powerful reminder of why we are so committed to providing CPR and first aid education to our community. In an emergency, those first few moments matter most. We applaud this mother's bravery and are incredibly proud to see our community education programs helping save lives—one class at a time.

Learn the skills that could save a loved one's life.
