Why do we run?

Because independence matters.

For more than 75 years, The League has worked to empower people with disabilities to achieve their full potential and live as independently as possible.

Every registration for the 2026 Race 4 Independence helps support programs and services that make a difference throughout Northeast Indiana.

Whether you run, walk, roll, stroll, volunteer, or cheer from the sidelines, you are helping create opportunities for independence.

Community living is a civil right.

For decades, people with disabilities and their families have fought for the right to live, work, learn, and thrive in their communities. The landmark Olmstead decision affirmed that unnecessary institutionalization is discrimination and that people with disabilities have the right to receive services in the most integrated setting appropriate to their needs.

Recent developments at the federal level have raised concerns about the future enforcement of these important protections. While Olmstead, the ADA, and Section 504 remain the law of the land, it is important that we remain informed, engaged, and committed to protecting the rights of people with disabilities.

The League stands alongside the Indiana Disability Alliance in supporting inclusion, independence, self-determination, and meaningful community participation for all.

Medicare Statement Red Flags

Not sure what you are looking for when reviewing your Medicare statements? That's okay! When you get your statements in the mail or through Medicare.gov, go to the claims area and just look for these few key words.

If you find anything referencing diabetic supplies, hospice, glucose monitors, urinary catheters, genetic tests, or even COVID-19 tests, these are often the most common scams and could be red flags. Call the SMP or fill out a Report Suspected Fraud form to report these concerns. https://smpresource.news/report-fraud

πŸ‘ Behind every great interpreter is a great start. For Vici, that start was the Bridge Program. πŸ‘

This week we celebrated our very own Vici earning her National Interpreter Certification (NIC) β€” and we couldn't be prouder.

But did you know her journey began right here, as a student in our Bridge Program? πŸŒ‰

The Bridge Program is designed to do exactly what its name says: bridge the gap between learning ASL and becoming a confident, working interpreter. Through real-world experience, mentorship, and hands-on training, we help students grow into skilled professionals who serve our Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Vici's success is proof of what's possible. πŸ’™ She's not just a graduate β€” she's an example of where this path can lead.

✨Are you a recent graduate ASL graduate or an ASL interpreter who just needs a little extra guidance? The Bridge Program could be your first step. Reach out to learn more about how you can get started.

Reach out to our DeafLink Director - Karen Horvath at [email protected] for more information.

Be sure to tag a recent ASL grad who needs to see this! πŸ‘‡

It is OFFICIALLY Father's Day -

Today we are shining a light on the dads of The League - the few, the brave, and the wildly outnumbered in an office. We know it takes patience, humor, and no small amount of bravery to put up with all of us - but we like to think we keep you sharp and make you even better!
John Guingrich, AJ Cramer, Fred Fulkerson & Chris H. - We appreciate everything you do & wish you the very best Father's Day!!

And we don't want to leave out Luke Labas & Terry Sible - who round out our brave crew of men - you both offer a steady presence among all the chaos. We are so grateful for you too!

Happy Father's Day to ALL our League dads & Father Figures!!

Happy Father's Day to all the dads, granddads, stepdads, father figures, and mentors in our community.

Today we celebrate the fathers who show up - who guide, support, and love fiercely. We especially honor the fathers navigating life with a disability, and those raising or caring for children with a disability. Your strength, patience, and devotion don't go unnoticed.

At The League, we see and celebrate you - to all the dads out there: we hope today brings you great joy & a whole lot of love.

πŸŸ₯β¬›πŸŸ© Happy Juneteenth.

Today we honor June 19, 1865 β€” the day freedom finally reached the last enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas. It's a day to celebrate liberation, reflect on how far we've come, and recommit to the work still ahead.

Freedom and full inclusion are at the heart of everything we do at The League for the Blind & Disabled. The independent living movement shares a common thread with the spirit of this day: the belief that every person deserves dignity, self-determination, and the right to live fully and freely in their community.
As we celebrate, we also recognize that the fight for equity β€” for all people, of all abilities and backgrounds β€” continues. We're grateful to stand alongside our community in that ongoing work.

However you observe today, we hope it's filled with reflection, connection, and hope. πŸ•ŠοΈ

We look forward to seeing you on Monday, June 22nd.
