Weekly Plant Pest Spotlight: We are going along with the theme of boxwood and talking about another common but different boxwood issue - Volutella Blight of Boxwood!
We have seen lots of this come through the office already this year - the most easily recognizable sign is the salmon-colored fungal spores on the underside of the leaf. These fungi are always around, but show up and cause visible symptoms when the plant is already stressed by environmental factors.
Unfortunately there are no resistant varieties and fungicide isnβt typically recommended for this particular issue in the home landscape. However, it is often a preventable or recoverable issue!
To prevent this, you want to plant boxwoods only in well-drained areas, and fertilize only before mid-summer.
Itβs also good to water during droughts and prune out any infected branches, making sure to burn or throw out any pruned material.
Happy gardening season π³πΈπΏπ
