Celebrate Smarter This Graduation Season

1. SET THE SCENE: To unlock eco-friendly décor, focus on reuse. For grad parties, it’s fun to get creative with school colors! Shop your house and backyard (thank you mother nature) instead of a giant, plastic-filled party store. Use fabrics and twinkle lights in place of plastic bunting and balloons. School color florals, favorite books, beautiful stones, thrifted tablecloths – these all go a long way to creating a beautiful, inviting gathering space.

2. SORT IT OUT: Offer clearly labeled containers for party goers to sort their waste: compost, recycling and landfill. Unsure about composting yourself? Reach out to a local composting service or a friend with a compost pile.

3. SERVE IT UP: Delicious food can really take a party to the next level! Serve it up on reusable dishes and silverware when possible. Finger foods are great for reducing the amount of cutlery needed. If you enjoy a theme - choose food that matches school colors. Ditch the single-use plastic water bottles and opt for large dispensers of water, lemonade and tea.

4. VIBES: Lawn games like badminton, ladder ball and corn hole are great ways to keep the party going with little waste.

It’s not about perfection. Small choices add up and inspire those around you to reduce waste in their lives as well. Most of all, congratulations to the class of 2026! Best wishes for a bright future and enjoy your celebration!

Attention teachers & families! As the school year wraps up, classrooms and backpacks often fill up with extra stuff. (Hello treasure-filled lockers!) A few mindful choices can help reduce waste, save money and teach students how to care for the environment.

Try these end-of-year waste reduction tips for schools and students:

• Reuse & Repurpose — Save supplies in good condition for next school year.
• Scrap Paper — Keep clean, one-sided paper for notes, sketches, and practice work.
• Supply Swap — Create a give-and-take area for folders, notebooks, pencils, markers and more.
• Experience-Based Rewards — Skip cheap, plastic trinkets and offer extra recess, movie day, dance parties or board game day instead.
• Recycle Right — Recycle paper and cardboard during classroom clean-outs.
• Recycle E-Waste — Old electronics should be recycled safely through a verified recycler or at our Electronics Recycling Event September 12. E-waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams and should never go in the landfill.

Big thanks to educators and families for investing in our future!️ Wishing you and your students a well-deserved summer respite.
