"Some serious structural defects can result in a lower assessment, Camp said. They include a crumbling foundation, a leaking roof and siding falling off the house. Homeowners must provide proof to successfully reduce their assessments.
That information can be used in the appeals process.
O’Day noted that this week’s property assessment mailings include a QR code in the upper right corner of the first page. The property’s owner may take a photo of the symbol with their cellphone to access the property record card on file with the county
“We need your help to make sure the characteristics on your property record card are accurate,” she said, adding officials don’t want anyone to overpay.
Those who don’t have computer access may call the Allen County Assessor’s office to discuss concerns with a staff member, O’Day said.
Wayne Township taxpayers might be surprised to learn that Camp also doesn’t mind when residents want to discuss how the numbers are determined. When one homeowner’s property value is more accurate, he said, values for all parcels in the neighborhood are more accurate."
The deadline for appeals is June 15. The Form 130, the required filing, can be found at www.allencounty.in.gov/792/Appeals.
