Arts Fort Worth thanks everyone for their interest in the newly installed Fort Worth Public Art project along State Highway 121, featuring Corten steel letters that spell out F O R T W O R T H. The Texas wildflower and native grasses that were seeded around the letters are being infiltrated by invasive weeds and are undergoing challenges getting established. The Design Team, Contractor and City Staff are implementing a plan to address the issue throughout the remainder of the year. This being done to make use of the remaining growing season while setting up the prairie-style landscape for success in the spring. Steps are being taken to mitigate the weeds without mowing, as mowing further spreads the weeds.
Once the intended native grasses and wildflowers have been established on the site, the area around and under the artwork will be mowed only once or twice a year, by a City contractor. The goal is a natural looking landscape that references a native prairie in north Texas. The resulting vegetation is intended to conceal the base of the letters and the ground-mounted light fixtures. It may take several growing cycles before the landscape reaches maturity.
