Did you know for every 100 pounds of human food produced from crops, there are 37 pounds of byproducts? Why is this important to beef producers? Cattle act as natural upcyclers by grazing crop residues, eating parts of plants humans cannot digest, and utilizing castoffs that are not up to grocery store grade. They convert all of this “waste” into delicious, nutritious beef! Cattle have a very important role in the environment, food cycles, and human diets.

Have Fun for 1!
Source: Nemours Foundation

Use this chart so you can keep track of every day you get at least 1 hour of physical activity this summer. Keep the chart where you can use it as a reminder to keep moving. Ask a family member or friend to join you. When you reach that daily goal, fill in a circle. If you have seven filled-in circles at the end of each week, reward yourself with a special healthy treat, a family outing, a new book, anything that’s healthy and makes you feel good!

Summer Goal
Source: Nemours Foundation

Without a plan, it’s easy to spend summer slinking from couch to computer, with regular stops at the fridge. So beat summertime doldrums by setting a specific, healthy goal. Maybe you want to train for a race, become a Red Cross-certified babysitter, set a personal sit-up record, or read a book a week. Ask yourself what you need to do to reach your goal. Break it down into steps. For example, instead of saying “Practice tennis,” say “I’ll play tennis for 1 hour on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday mornings.” Use the calendar to chart your progress.

"HOT" TIPS FOR SAFE SUMMER RIDING

As you prepare for fun in the sun with your favorite equine, make sure you understand how the combination of heat and humidity can take the fun part out the equation — and potentially even turn into a dangerous situation for your horse.

When riding in hot weather, remember to take precautions and use your common sense. Remain vigilant for dehydration and for signs of heat exhaustion, as the situation can quickly escalate into heat stroke. If your horse looks hot and tired, it's time for a drink, a cold bath and a break in the shade.

Consult your veterinarian for more information, or learn more about the signs of heat stroke on our website at https://aaep.org/issue/heat-stroke

We live in Fort Worth, what do I do to have my soil tested?
There is a strange crow problem at my home. Daily I hear banging at my front door - plate glass storm door over black front door. When I open the door (usually after several bangs) 6 or 7 chicken sized crows fly away. One or several of them is doing the banging, and getting bloody in the process. There is always blood dripping down the storm door and often big splotches of blood on my mat and front stoop. The only thing I can figure out, having heard crows are strongly drawn to shiny things, is that they are trying to get to my brass door knocker and can't figure out that it's behind glass. It's at that level they "attack." Could someone in ornithologyy please respond and advise me about stopping this behavior. [email protected]
Our trees have green glowing insects that are covering our trees. The trees look as if there are ferrie flies all over them. Any idea what they are?
