A 3,700-acre urban nature center and wildlife refuge in Fort Worth featuring more than 21 miles of trails through Cross Timbers forests, Fort Worth Prairie, and Trinity River bottomlands, with bison, alligators, prairie dogs, diverse birdlife, and more. Over 3600 acres, the FWNC&R is one of the largest city-owned nature centers in the United States and offers residents and visitors the opportunity

to immerse themselves in the natural history of north central Texas . Staff naturalists at the Hardwicke Interpretive Center are available to facilitate your exploration.

In 2006, the Nature Center welcomed Michael Perez, seen here holding the 20 years sign, to the team. Michael started off as a Naturalist Assistant, a Naturalist, and eventually the Education Manager. There was a small break in the action where he took over as a Community Center Supervisor, but came back to a place he loved. You can catch Michael leading folks on bird walks, helping Naturalists with school groups, and with programs. Please congratulate Michael on 20 years of service to the City of Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge.

Congratulations to Jessica Carrillo, our Office Manager, for her 15 years of dedicated service to the City of Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge. Jessica (positioned to the left of the gentleman holding the sign) started with Municipal Courts and came over several years ago and fit right in with the staff and the mission of the Nature Center. Jessica is a team player and all knowing when it comes to our registration system, budget matters, and so much more. When you are at the Hardwicke Interpretive Center, please congratulate her on 15 years and more to come.

We were honored to recently host Mayor Mattie Parker and Fort Worth’s Greenspace Leadership Team at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge. The visit gave Fort Worth’s leaders an opportunity to learn more about the Refuge, our conservation and education goals, and to experience the wetlands, a critical part of the landscape that many people don’t often get to see up close.

The Nature Center & Refuge is a great example of why Good Natured, Fort Worth’s Greenspace Partnership, is so important. As our city grows, protecting and investing in the natural spaces we have, while creating opportunities to preserve more, will be critical to Fort Worth’s quality of life and natural character.

We’re excited about the Good Natured projects underway and the important role this initiative will play in protecting natural spaces across Fort Worth for generations to come.

Our thoughts and best wishes are with our Palo Pinto County neighbors and the firefighters responding to the Ross Fire. We’re seeing many of our partners and friends from across North Texas assisting with this incident and others across the state. Parker County is one of these collaborators who came across our feed this morning, but we know many more of our friends are working on this fire.

Many of these same units support the Refuge’s prescribed burns, and those trainings help prepare crews for situations just like this. The challenges they face are immense, but these professionals never back down from protecting their communities and natural resources.
