This past weekend Maj Gambrell (L) and Maj Johnson (R) were the first Marine pilot team to fly a C-40A as 2P and TAC. Sgt Bell was also on the flight as a 2LM. Missions like this help build the teamwork required to safely accomplish our mission. Thanks to VR-59 for letting us sign for the plane. Next stop an all USMC crew. #riseoftheroadrunner

Both our celebrated hymnal phrase “From the halls of Montezuma…” and commemorative trouser red blood stripe immortalize the Battle of Chapultepec (12 - 13 September 1847), where valiant Marines victoriously captured Chapultepec Castle in the Mexican-American war. MAG-41 was challenged to honor those Marines with a Workout of the Day (see below).

The Marines of MAG-41 Det 'B' were honored to perform funeral honors for Colonel Dave Severance on September 15th at Miramar National Cemetery, after he passed away on August 2nd at the age of 102.

Col Severance is best remembered as the Company Commander of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. He led the Marines who raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi in the iconic photograph, and received the Silver Star after the month-long battle where his company sustained an 85% casualty rate, leaving him as the only officer in Easy Company to walk off the island unwounded.

He attended flight training and became a Naval Aviator following World War II, flying the F7F Tigercat with the "Flying Nightmares" of VMF(N)-513 on 69 combat missions during the Korean War and earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was later the Commanding Officer of the Marine Air Reserve Training Detachment at NAS Bennett Field in Brooklyn, NY, before retiring to La Jolla, CA in 1968.

Fair winds and following seas to a legendary Marine, Semper Fidelis!

#OTD in 2012, LtCol Christopher "Otis" Raible, Commanding Officer of VMA-211, and Sgt Bradley Atwell of MALS-13 were killed defending their units from a Taliban attack on Camp Bastion airfield in Afghanistan.

That night, 15 Taliban infiltrated the perimeter of the base and attacked the Marines' flight line with automatic weapons, hand grenades, and RPGs. The attack sent flames from burning fuel storage tanks hundreds of feet into the air, destroyed six of VMA-211's AV-8B Harriers, and damaged several other aircraft. Marines across the flight line dropped their wrenches and picked up their weapons to augment the British and contract security forces defending the base, ultimately killing 14 of the attackers and capturing the other.

The Wake Island Avengers of VMFA-211 continue to honor their former commander's legacy with Otis' name painted on their F-35B Lightning II aircraft.

While at the museum, Marines from several MAG-41 squadrons were divided into seven groups. Each Marine was assigned a specific aircraft with historical significance to MAG-41, and was expected to research and present this aircraft to their group.
The trip's purpose was to build camaraderie and leadership skills, give the Marines a broader perspective of the aviation operations they support, and educate them on the history of MAG-41 aviation operations and aircraft.

VMFA-112 Cowboys working in cohesion with VMGR-234 and VMFT-401, as well as the Air Force's 22nd Air Refueling Wing, to project long-range striking capabilities!

NAVAL AIR STATION FORT WORTH JOINT RESERVE BASE, TEXAS – Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 112 (VMFA-112), Marine Aircraft Group 41, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, U.S. Marine Forces Reserve participated in an inter-service long-range strike here on August 24, 2021.

With aerial refueling support from adjacent units Marine Aerial Refueler Squadron 234 and the Air Force’s 22nd Air Refueling Wing, VMFA-112 launched six F/A-18 hornets from NAS Fort Worth JRB to a training range in Yuma, Arizona to conduct an ordnance strike on a target, covering over 1000 miles while evading and maneuvering against F-5N Tiger II’s from Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401.

The overall mission time of approximately five hours, coordination with external agencies, inter-unit and service operability between fellow MAG-41 squadrons and the Air Force, and unfamiliar territory exercised the capabilities of all aircraft and pilots involved.

VMFA-112 was part of history on August 11th when they received fuel from a KC-46 Pegasus from the 22nd Air Refueling Wing, marking the first operational mission of the U.S. Air Force's newest tanker.

Air to air refueling enables the Cowboys to project combat power across the globe, and extend their combat radius once in theater.
