Governor Abbott spent Wednesday at a Walmart in Alamo celebrating tax free weekend. His office puts the statewide savings at about $140 million. Texas levied $89.4 billion in property taxes last year, roughly $245 million a day. The entire weekend of savings he is promoting amounts to about thirteen hours of property tax collections.

Since Abbott took office, property tax levies are up 74.8 percent while population growth and inflation together explain about 61 percent of it. County levies are up 109 percent. Special district levies are up 105 percent. City levies are up 101 percent. Most Texans are paying that on the same house they already owned. Eight percent off a backpack for three days is not tax relief. It is a photo op standing in front of the problem.

Public property. Peaceful protest. No trespassing. No touching the camera. No damage.

Just citizens lawfully standing between government surveillance and the people it tracks.

Bring water, a sign, and plenty of sunblock.

Tim O'Hare needs to go.

Tarrant County Judge Tim O'Hare cleared every member of the public out of a Commissioners Court meeting today, then had former state Rep. Lon Burnam arrested and carried out of the chamber.

The offense? Speaking and reacting during public comment on a plan to cut polling locations before the November election.

The line that set O'Hare off came from resident Ambika Sharma, who told commissioners they "keep Russia my Texas."

That is protected speech. Comparing your own government to an authoritarian regime is not a crime and it is not a disruption. It is the exact kind of political criticism the First Amendment was written to protect. Nobody holding power has a constitutional right to be comfortable while they hold it.

Here is the part that should bother you no matter which team you root for. A government body is free to ban applause entirely. What it cannot do is welcome the clapping it agrees with and clear the room over the clapping it doesn't. The Constitution has no "rules for thee" clause. Decorum that only comes down on one viewpoint isn't decorum. It's censorship holding a gavel.

If you can be removed and arrested for how you react to your own government, public comment isn't participation. It's a permission slip the powerful can revoke the second they hear something they don't like.

Liberty means the government has to sit there and take the criticism. Especially the criticism that stings.

Your new car is being designed to decide if you're allowed to drive it.

Section 24220 of the infrastructure bill orders NHTSA to mandate "impairment detection" in every new car. Cameras watching your eyes. Software judging your face. Authority to shut you down if the algorithm doesn't like what it sees.

The accuracy record? NIST found facial recognition false positive rates run 100x worse for some demographic groups. Real-road testing flagged sober, alert drivers as impaired 29% of the time. Accuracy drops at night. NHTSA itself admitted to Congress that no technology on earth meets the standard the law requires.

They're mandating it anyway.

Now picture the use case nobody in Washington gamed out. Hurricane bearing down. Water in the street. You're loading your kids in the car at 2 a.m. with your heart pounding and your eyes wide. To a camera, panic looks exactly like impairment. There is no breathalyzer for fear.

We tried this in 1974 with seat belt interlocks. Sober drivers stranded in driveways. The backlash was so hot Congress banned the tech within months. Fifty years later they're back with a camera pointed at your face and a permanent record of everywhere it's watched you.

And if you think that footage stays in the car, GM already got caught selling your driving data to insurance brokers for pennies. Ford's patent portfolio includes scanning occupants against warrant databases. The hardware ships for "safety." The business model comes later.

Your car should work for you. Not report on you. Not judge you. Not strand you in a flood because an algorithm with a 29% error rate decided you looked funny.
