Traces of Texas reader Todd McDaniel generously forwarded this photo of the Montgomery Ward in downtown Fort Worth in the aftermath of the 1949 flood. Todd's great grandfather worked at the store at the time, and Todd himself worked there years later.

Thank you, Todd! Y'all stay safe up there in north Texas!

This is Alton Ray in Fort Worth back in 1895. Alton Ray worked his way up from “extra man” to chief of detectives with the Fort Worth Police Department. Doesn't he look like a man who is not to be trifled with? This fantastic portrait was taken by the famous Swartz Brothers, the "first family" of Fort Worth photographers, and comes courtesy of the Fort Worth Public Library.
