Friends,
Because so many of you are calling and emailing with concerns about our historic Stockyards, I believe this short update is warranted. The Design Standards Task Force, appointed by the City Council, does, indeed, seem to be stalled, but for many reasons.
First, committee members have yet to agree on their scope and a vision. I am not really sure why so many references to historic "preservation" and "safeguarding" are being deleted out of the first section of the draft standards. We residents and business owners hold this historic area dear. We want to preserve this heritage for perpetuity, and we want to make sure the area is economically viable.
Personally, I am concerned about the height of new construction. Our historic buildings cannot be dwarfed by tall structures even if they have a "western" facade!
Many of you have asked what you can do. Here is a link to the draft report:http://stockyardspreservationfoundation.org/downloads/Stockyards-Task-Force-presentation-7-29-15.pdf
Please read it and then engage in the discussion.
I look forward to your thoughts and feedback.
Sincerely,
Steve Murrin
