Fort Worth Sister Cities International

Fort Worth Sister Cities has a legacy of commitment to expanding global relationships for peace and prosperity at home and abroad.

Youth President Will Lourcey said it best when he accepted our 10th award for having the best Sister Cities program in the nation!

Help us continue to foster peace and understanding through people-to-people programs by donating today for #NTxGivingDay. Donate here: https://www.northtexasgivingday.org/fwsci.

Yesterday, we were recognized by Sister Cities International for having the best sister city program in the nation! One of our dedicated students Will Lourcey graciously accepted the award on our behalf.

Will deserves some extra recognition, though, because he received the Youth Leadership Award from the national organization for his outstanding work in our community. Will has many accolades, one of which is founding his own 501(c)3 organization called FROGS (Friends Reaching Our Goals). FROGS mobilizes youth to make positive change in communities and advocate for the hungry and for youth volunteerism.

Thank you to Will for commitment to making the world a better place!

Viva Mexico! Happy Independence Day to our friends from Toluca, Mexico!

Sept. 16 marks the day Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bell and gave the call to arms that triggered the Mexican War of Independence in 1810. Every year on the eve of Independence Day, the President of Mexico re-enacts the cry from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City, while ringing the same bell Hidalgo used.

These photos are from last year's Independence Day celebrations in Toluca, Mexico where Municipal President Juan Rodolfo Sanchez Gomez gave his own reenactment from the Municipal Palace.

We hope our friends have a wonderful and safe holiday!

BOARD SPOTLIGHT

As we approach the end of our fiscal year that means we're saying goodbye to some of our outstanding board members. Today, we're going to spotlight Lu Pham!

Lu helped launched our inaugural exploratory exchange to Vietnam in 2014. As the unofficial translator during the trip, Lu became the de facto point of contact for Sister Cities whenever a business in Vietnam asks the Ha Noi mayor’s office for guidance in doing business in the US. Through this relationship we have welcomed several business delegations from Vietnam in order to cultivate opportunities for Fort Worth. Furthermore, Lu is always willing and able to lend a helping hand when needed like when he escorted a group of librarians from Kazakhstan to their meetings last summer. Lu is staying on the board as an Advisory Board Member and we're thrilled to continue working with him!

Thank you, Lu!

It's #FastFactFriday!

Did you know Toluca, Mexico sits at the base of the fourth highest mountain in Mexico? The Nevado de Toluca or Xinantécatl sits at an elevation of 15,354 feet at its highest point. The god Tolo was supposed to reside in the volcano's crater. Its original indigenous name was Chignahualtecatl which means "Nine Mountains" but later was named Xinantecatl which means "naked man", because the silhouette of its crater resembles a sleeping man, before the Spaniards named it Nevado, meaning "snow-covered." It is the only volcano in Mexico that has two lagoons and can be reached by automobile.

Top 20 "No-Travel Tips" from Rick Steves Travelers

Homebound and missing Europe? A few weeks ago, I asked my Facebook followers for their best "No-Travel Tips": ways that we can incorporate the little, ahem, joys of travel into our non-travel lives. The response was overwhelming...and hilarious. Some highlights:

Serve your housemates tepid water, and say you'll be right back. Return three hours later, smile, and ask, “Would like some bread?”

Walk through your living room every three minutes while people are watching TV, wag your finger at them, and solemnly announce, “No photo, no video.”

Next time you go to the grocery store, gather all the cash you have in your hands, hold it out to the cashier, and say, “How much?”

I collected my 20 favorite "No-Travel Tips" into a free poster. Download the PDF, print it out, and share it with your friends as we mask up, stay home, embrace science, and patiently and diligently get through this crisis together.

We've got more fun ideas like this on deck for the coming weeks — creative ways to experience Europe even while we're stuck at home. To be sure you don't miss out, be sure to "Like" me on Facebook.

Happy anniversary to our friends from Toluca, Mexico!

Fort Worth and Toluca have been partnered for 22 years and counting! To commemorate the occasion we're throwing it back with this photo from June 2016 when we sent an official delegation led by Mayor Betsy Price to Toluca, Mexico for important municipal meetings and to learn about our wonderful partnership. Ciudades Hermanas de Toluca in Toluca always roll out the welcome wagon for us and show us all the sights like the Cosmovitral, in this photo, which is a botanical garden housed in a building covered in stained glass murals.

Cheers to our friendship and continued partnership for the years to come!

Happy Independence Day to our friends in Indonesia!

On this day in 1945, Indonesia’s proclamation of independence officially set the self-declared nation on a path to sovereignty from Dutch colonial rule. While the most common celebration is a simple raising of the national flag, it has become a tradition for people to do it in extreme places, such as the top of a mountain. It’s a unique tradition for a nation with 500 mountains, including many that are active volcanoes. Colloquially known as tujuhbelasan or 17-an which means "seventeenth" in Indonesian, it is a joyous celebration, that often includes parades and carnivals.

It's #FastFactFriday!

Did you know the French have their own cowboys? In southern France, where our sister city Nîmes is located, French cowboys, called gardians, protect and care for the herds of horses and black bulls that roam around the Camargue region. They're one of the oldest groups of cowboys in the world, and their ancestors were probably some of the first American cowboys. Back in the 1600s, these gardians sailed to New Orleans, where they rode through the bayous of Louisiana and Texas, rounding up cattle. More reasons why we are a perfect match!
