As someone who believes in public service, I've learned that when we make it easier for people to participate, our communities become stronger.
That's why I was disappointed to learn that the Tarrant County Commissioners Court considered reducing Election Day polling locations for November. The proposal would cut Election Day voting sites from 316 in the 2022 midterm election to 176, a roughly 45% decrease. It would also reduce early voting locations from 50 to 42. I firmly believe we should be finding ways to increase access to the ballot box, not decrease it.
I'm thankful the vote was tabled until the September Commissioners Court meeting, but I hope this proposal is ultimately removed from consideration altogether.
I also want to recognize everyone who took the time to show up and advocate. Civic engagement doesn't end on Election Day. It happens every day when neighbors speak up for one another, and I'm grateful to the community leaders and residents who made their voices heard.
No matter your background or your political beliefs, access to voting locations matters. Advocacy looks different for everyone, and that's okay. I encourage everyone to take the time to learn more, stay informed, and find your own way to get involved. That's how we build a stronger Tarrant County together.
