“What?! I love this book. There’s a whole chapter on atoms that’s amazing.”

Science teacher and book nerd Kim Hendrix of Northwest High School is a regular Wellie volunteer and brings barrels of laughs whenever she visits. Together with her Destination Imagination Team and the Strong Family Kim and the crew knocked out organizing hundreds of books on Sunday. Hundreds.

Teachers already give so much and it’s incredibly humbling when they spend the little extra time they have to help us help other educators.

Hooray for Kim, her students, the Strongs and fascinating books on atoms!

Sometimes we clean up nice and take pictures. Big thank you to our pals at 360 West, Meda Kessler, and writer Laura Samuel Meyn for inviting us to share our story and the big plans we have for 2021.

Of course, we have to give a shout out to Eugene Levy the Dog for clearing his busy schedule to make this photo shoot refined and glamorous.

Onward and upward in ‘21. But first, a quick look back at our 2020 scorecard, which was made possible because of the support from our community, the muscles flexed by our volunteers, the determination of our tiny team, AND the trust and love from our beloved teachers.

At The Welman Project we believe that everyone has something to give and that anyone can contribute to the betterment of their community. Big or small, young or not-so-young, simple or grand. Today, and everyday, we encourage you to toss that bit of good into the bucket. It’s a habit that sticks easily. A smile, a gesture or a whole day of service - let’s fill those buckets!

Martin Luther King Day of Service was the brain child of former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis. The King Holiday and Service Act encourages citizens to reflect and honor Dr. King by engaging in activities that serve others. This federal legislation was signed into law on August 23, 1994 and its impact has created a ripple of good vibes, compassion and positive actions on the national scale.

A ‘fairy’ magical connection. What happens when you take a crafty math teacher, a group of middle schoolers with glue guns and Wellie materials? A fairy garden that is keeping the magic alive for tiny students.

MS math teacher, Luanne Lewis of Lake Country Christian School in FW, added an elective for her students this year - Environmental Arts. The Fairy Garden has turned into a rotating magical world curated by her students to surprise and inspire the lower school grades. This miniature world, made from reimagined odds and ends, has given the school a whimsical way to connect. It’s a beautiful thing when a little creativity can literally bring a window of opportunity (and magic) to our youngest students.

“I love that this project has helped my students see how rewarding it is to create something that blesses other people. I’ve loved watching them enjoy the process and take pride in their finished products. A surprising outcome of the Environmental Arts class has been the bonding and relationships built with these students.” - Ms Lewis

Educator Warehouse on the New Welman Campus!
Our tiny team is busting our tooshies to open the Educator Warehouse. It is our goal to provide the very BEST experience for our educators in this new space and we want to have everything absolutely perfect (including a rad new way of self check-out). We so appreciate everyone’s patience as we work around the clock to open the doors. That said, see above for volunteering! The more hands and hearts, the sooner we can do this figurative ribbon cutting!

Let’s have the most fun in 2021, y’all!
Love, the Wellies

Hey Siri: Why do we eat black-eyed peas to celebrate the New Year? Tradition and superstition are all part of the fun - and no doubt we’ve all had to reinvent how we celebrated in 2020. And whether you believe in the power of the peas or kissing at midnight, we hope you find joy as you ring in the new year!

But seriously, what’s with the peas? https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/4098987001

The Wellies wish you a very merry Christmas Orange season. A fav legend and tradition of Wellie Vanessa’s, the Christmas Orange celebrates the spirit of giving & sharing - after all, oranges are, by nature, THE most shareable fruit.

Getting a little wild with the Canva app, the orange in this post is actually an ornament from Vanessa’s late grandmother. Just like the rest of us this orange has been through some seasons and is having a hard time keeping it together this year (it’s more of a silver ball with leaves at this point). Come to think of it, it looks more like a peach but she was always told it was a Christmas Orange, so we will just stick with that story.

How did we celebrate the last day of school before Winter Break? Duh. By rolling up with Barb the Bus and hanging out (safely) with 67 teachers in jammies from Dan Powell Early Learning Academy in Everman ISD! Lots of goodies were given - including many a new Expo marker - because according to their amazing principal these educators are most certainly on the Nice List!

Best quote of the day: “I told my kindergartens that I hope Santa brings me new dry erase markers because my last one had just dried out. Then y’all showed up. You are my Santa.” ❤️🎅🏾

We aren’t taking credit for the big guy in the red suit, but we sure are thankful for all of you who have supported this mission during such a weird year so that the Wellies could end 2020 playing Santa to some incredible teachers.

Holiday hustle got ya stressin’?

Come chill and enjoy the little things with us today at the Community Shop! We are here until 5P and jamming to obligatory jolly music. Let’s celebrate all those tiny bits of micro moments that have made us smile this year.

Big, humongous thanks to Dawson Middle School of Carroll ISD! Yesterday, 10 students and 2 coaches spent their day of giving moving box after box from the original Welman HQ over to the new Welman Campus. Without their help, muscles and all around delightful humor this material migration would not have been possible, or as fun! Plus, we’ve never seen so many 13 year old boys get so excited about using moving dollies. Or really any person for that matter. Go Dawson Dragons!

Mad props to Jasmine and our fairy godmother photographer, Wendie Wright Lunsford!

Vanessa here to brag on my Team Wellie. Steven, Taylor, Jasmine, Gary (Wellie Dad) and Eugene Levy the Dog spent several backbreaking hours yesterday and today to assemble shelves at the New Welman Campus (our fancy word for our new HQ). I mean, you could fit so many elves on these shelves. The hustle is real to get the space open for our educators as soon as possible. And where many would think this would be an impossible feat for such a small team MY WELLIES, MY PALS grab a drill, bring the pup and make magic happen. Where was I? Well usually we take Monday off - it’s now become my day to handle virtual school with my kiddo and her two best buds. Ugh. So much guilt knowing that while Team Wellie was spending their day off building shelves to meet our deadline I was sitting cozy teaching first grade regrouping with two digit numbers. You might think your co-workers are amazing. And I’m sure they are. But MY team is made of humans who make the impossible happen - and do it under the supervision of an adorable scruffy dog. Don’t worry guys I’ll be there bright and early tomorrow with my drill. And if the Wee Wellie passes first grade, know that it’s because these guys gave me grace and patience when I needed to do the mom thing.

Happy Hanukkah, friends!

Here’s a fun video on how to draw your own, Hanukkiah, which is the special menorah that is used during this celebration. Please note the video mistakingly says menorah - but it’s actually a Hanukkiah with 9 branches instead of 7!

Yesterday was #givingtuesday so in true Wellie fashion we set out to give BIG with a Barb visit to Fort Worth ISD’s W.M. Green Elementary School. Big thanks to Wendie Wright Lunsford, Troy Chapman and Neighborhood Needs Fort Worth for stocking Barb the Bus with so many brand new school supplies! Last holiday season we posted a series called Deck the Halls, which hopefully offered some inspo to those looking to reduce winter waste and get creative with gift giving. This week we are revisiting the series (because honestly some of the photos are too cute not to share again). But also we are reposting because many of the materials you’ll see you can now find at Welman’s new Community Shop, which will be open every Saturday until Christmas from 10a-5p! 3950 W Vickery Blvd | FW

EDIT: Don’t worry educators! We will be reopening soon at our new location 🙂. And, community friends, our Community Shop will be open starting Shop Small Saturday (Nov 28) with all proceeds going to our main mission to fill more classrooms and less landfills! Stayed tuned this week for more info and inspo on our Community Shop opening!

Last days are bittersweet. On Saturday we hosted our last group of educators to shop at our original Welman HQ. There were new faces and a handful of our favorite regulars. Fairy Godmother Vicky was on deck to help shoppers and (safely) spread her infectious enthusiasm for teaching.
$13,151 worth of supplies were distributed in 6 hours. It was a good day. After a little
cry it’s now time to begin the great migration to our New Welman HQ.

Shout out to the Welman Project! I always find great things. Sitting in class multitasking to help my students...on one screen my students are sharing their zoom lesson as I facilitate and im on the other laptop (laptop found at the Welman) side by side guiding them step by step in the lesson!
Pumpkin craft: Get free plastic Christmas ornaments at Welman Project. Put in a ziploc and squirt orange paint in. Students squish around to paint ball. Dump out on a paper plate to dry. Call one student at a time to attach free orange & brown sparkle tulle on the ball with a glue gun. Get free green yarn and attach at the top to hang the pumpkin. Use thinking maps to brainstorm what pumpkins ARE like, HAVE and CAN do. Next kinder writing time!♥️(Pumpkins are orange. Pumpkins have seeds. Pumpkins can grow.) ALL materials were free except paint & glue!!! Welman Project, YOU ROCK! Thanks for providing items that make school fun!! ♥️ (P.S. All the adults thought they were loofahs though! 😂🤣)
My students needed extra storage so I used zip ties and paper trays to create accessible storage for students! Twenty five paper trays WERE FREE at Welman Project!! ♥️
Thanks for all the great stuff!!! 1st day back in the books and was a great success!! The kids loved all the cool stuff!!! Here’s a video for all the share!
Hello Friends - We have two desks left at Cancer Care Services up for grabs and a tall grey filing cabinet (not pictured) They are free - you just need to come and pick them up. Black on is just a desk - not drawers Brown was part of a U shaped desk - can't find the other pieces, but the drawers work and it is fully functional. Both are about 5 feet by 2.5 feet -and a bit heavy. I can help load into a truck if needed. I can not deliver. Message me if you are interested.
Thanks Welman Project for the desk and filing cabinets. I’m starting the year off organized!!
I just won the biggest prize EVER. I received an email from a former student/tennis player who has gone on to great things-HE is a teacher, right here in our fair city. He says he remembered my laugh, of all things! I have to say that I remembered his patience with me as a new coach, his calm outlook on the courts and his leadership at school. He made My day...and it's due to you Wellies! I just want to say thank you!
