PSA: Grass clippings don't belong on the street, sidewalk or in the storm drain.

When rain washes them into storm drains, they break down and release nutrients that fuel algae growth in our local streams and the Ohio River.

Another thing to check: Your city or county may already have rules about clippings and yard debris. A quick search for your municipality's yard waste ordinance could save you a headache (and a fine).

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! 🍎

No one at SD1 knows how much teachers do better than our Education Specialist, Katrina Harney. She works with educators across the region to help students understand how their choices affect the creeks and rivers in our neighborhoods.

This school year: 1,474 students completed SD1's environmental education program, and testing showed a 31% increase in stormwater knowledge.

Teachers incorporate this curriculum during an already busy school year, helping their schools earn a stormwater bill credit while teaching students another way to care for their community.

Thank you to all the teachers who make room for these important topics!

What’s on the street doesn’t just disappear… it can end up in your local creek.

Storm drains aren’t filters. Most lead straight to the nearest waterway, not a treatment plant. And even in combined-sewer areas, heavy rain can overwhelm the system and send untreated water out anyway.

That's why keeping litter off your street actually matters for the river.

Thinking about adopting a pet this May?

We're partnering with Kenton County Animal Services to help you start off on the right paw. Adopt or foster in May and receive a free starter kit from SD1 with essentials like pet waste bags, a dispenser and a few extras to make picking up after your pet easier from day one.

It's a simple way to care for your new best friend and the environment.

Share this post to help spread the word. The more people who see it, the more animals find their second chance.

Did you know your storm drain has a secret identity?

Well, maybe not a secret idenity, exactly, but it is doing a lot more beyond the curb than most people realize.

Unlike wastewater, stormwater doesn’t get cleaned or filtered before it reaches nearby waterways. Storm drains move water off your street straight to the nearest creek or river.

That means if there’s pollution on the street, rainwater carries it directly into local waterways. And if the drain is blocked? Water has nowhere to go, and street flooding becomes a bigger issue.

The system starts at the curb, and it works best when everyone does their part. Before the next storm, check your storm drain.

Want to help protect Northern Kentucky waterways this Earth Month?

Through SD1's Save-a-Stream program, you can mark a storm drain with clear signage that reminds others where it leads. Across Northern Kentucky, there are more than 25,000 storm drains, each one connected to a local waterway. Most of them are unmarked.

How it works: You pick the spot, we provide the materials, and one more storm drain gets a few more people looking out for it.

Last year, volunteers marked 178 drains. This year, yours could be next. Learn more at https://www.sd1.org/206/Storm-Drain-Marking-Volunteer-Program.

Congratulations on such a great turnout! SD1 was thrilled to be a part of it.

TradesNKY is celebrating more than 1,000 students connected to career opportunities at SkillUp last week.

We are so proud of our region and the strong partnerships between educators, industry leaders and the community. Events like SkillUp are opening doors, changing perceptions and helping students see the value of the skilled trades.
