On Monday, April 13, 2026, a project is scheduled to begin on U.S. Highway 12 from Mobridge west approximately 15 miles and on S.D. Highway 1806 both north and south of Highway 12. The Highway 12 project will primarily involve pipe and guardrail corner improvements on the shoulders of the highway.

On Highway 1806 north of Highway 12, work will include mainline pipe installations and short grading sections. Traffic will be reduced to one-half width in these work zones during daytime hours, with flaggers and a pilot car guiding the traveling public.

On Highway 1806 south of Highway 12, work will focus on a slide repair. Traffic will be controlled with stop signs through the work zone. At times during the daytime, flaggers and a pilot car will guide the traveling public.

Commuters should be alert through the entire work zone for workers adjacent to moving traffic, construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zones, and changing traffic patterns.

Standing Rock has been awarded approximately $1.2 million through the Federal Highway Administration Tribal Transportation Safety Fund to address safety concerns along BIA 3400 near Little Eagle.

This project focuses on a curved section near the school and community that has presented ongoing safety concerns. Improvements will include roadway realignment, drainage upgrades, and design updates to meet current safety standards and reduce crash risks.

For general awareness on roadway costs:

• Maintaining 1 mile of gravel road typically costs $5,000–$15,000 per year
• Rebuilding a gravel road can cost between $80,000–$200,000 per mile
• Constructing 1 mile of new asphalt road typically ranges from $1.2 million–$3 million

These projects require significant planning, engineering, and construction to ensure long-term safety and durability for the community.

Project Timeline:
• Planning & environmental work: Complete by Fall 2026
• Construction start: Spring/Summer 2027
• Project completion: End of 2027
• Fully open to the public: January 2028

This project represents an important step toward improving roadway safety and conditions for the Little Eagle community.

The Federal Highway Administration awarded roughly $2 million to the Standing Rock Sioux and Spirit Lake tribes. It will be used to realign a roadway and improve the accessibility of a walkway. Winter Storm Warning/Advisory – Standing Rock Area

The National Weather Service has upgraded the Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning/Advisory for our region beginning Saturday and continuing into early Sunday morning.

Current forecasts indicate the highest snowfall totals will occur along the South Dakota border. Snowfall amounts may reach moderate to heavy totals in some areas, and strong winds may create blowing snow that significantly reduces visibility.

Timing:
Late Saturday morning through early Sunday morning.

Potential Impacts:
• Snow-covered and slippery roads
• Reduced visibility due to blowing snow
• Difficult travel conditions, especially Saturday afternoon and evening

Residents are encouraged to:
• Monitor weather updates from the National Weather Service and local news
• Use caution when traveling and allow extra time if driving
• Prepare for changing weather conditions throughout the weekend

Standing Rock Tribal Roads will continue monitoring the storm.
Please stay safe and plan accordingly.

We have identified a large bolt protruding near the railroad tracks in the area shown below. This poses a potential safety hazard to pedestrians, vehicles near crossings, and railroad operations.

This issue has been reported to BNSF for immediate attention and repair.

Please avoid the area and do not walk along or near the tracks until it has been corrected. Railroad property is dangerous even under normal conditions, and this added hazard increases risk.
