It may look fun—but when our crews are in the water, it often means someone is facing a serious emergency.

CAL FIRE Swiftwater Rescue teams are specially trained to respond quickly in dangerous water conditions, conducting rescue operations in fast-moving rivers, flood channels, and other high-risk environments when every second matters.

These highly skilled teams are part of CAL FIRE’s all-risk response capability, ready to assist communities when water emergencies happen without warning.

As temperatures rise and waterways become busier, remember to enjoy rivers, lakes, and streams responsibly. Stay aware of conditions, know your limits, wear proper safety gear, and look out for one another. Smart choices on the water help keep everyone safer.

Congratulations to Ivan and Levi on being selected to receive the prestigious Civilian Award for EMS from the California Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) for their extraordinary courage and lifesaving actions.

Their quick thinking, teamwork, and bravery during a critical emergency involving their father, CAL FIRE Captain Carl Logan, helped save his life. Out of 175 applications, Ivan and Levi were selected to receive the only EMSA award presented to individuals who are not first responders.

The award ceremony will take place on June 2 at the Culinary Institute of America Greystone in St. Helena. We are proud to recognize their selfless actions and this well-deserved honor.

To learn more about their incredible story, read the article below.

Ivan and Levi Logan were working a remote timber job with their father, Cal Fire Captain Carl Logan, when a fallen redwood changed everything — and the teenage brothers’ quick actions are the reason he’s alive to tell the story. 👉 Read more on Redheaded Blackbelt.

Don’t give fire a ladder.

Those low, untrimmed tree branches might not seem like a big deal—but they can help fire climb straight from the ground into the tree canopy.

A few quick actions can make a big difference:
• Limb up trees to create space between the ground and branches
• Clear out dry leaves, needles, and debris under trees
• Keep branches trimmed away from roofs and chimneys

Small changes = a stronger defensible space.

What a day at the Hero’s & Helpers Day hosted at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds!

Earlier this month, CAL FIRE Humboldt–Del Norte Unit firefighters had an amazing time connecting with the community, meeting families, and sharing what we do. From exploring engines to learning about the Firehawk, the day was filled with fun, smiles, great conversations, and opportunities to connect.

A big thank you to the event organizers for bringing the community together and making such a fun and meaningful day possible, and to everyone who stopped by to say hello — we always appreciate the opportunity to connect with the communities we serve!

A Red Flag Warning does not mean a wildfire has started — it means conditions are ideal for one to start and spread quickly.

Dry vegetation, low humidity, warm temperatures, and strong winds can turn even a small spark into a fast-moving wildfire.

Think of it as a high fire danger day:
• Move flammable items away from your home
• Avoid activities that can create sparks, like mowing dry grass, dragging chains, or using equipment in dry vegetation
• Stay alert and report smoke or fire immediately

One less spark can make all the difference.

CAL FIRE Humboldt–Del Norte Unit hosted the annual Redwood Coast Fire Preparedness Exercises from May 12–14, 2026, bringing together 17 crews from Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties for hands-on training and certification.

Four CDCR crews, two CCC crews, one CAL GUARD crew, and eleven CAL FIRE crews took part in the exercises—demonstrating the strength of interagency partnerships and a shared commitment to protecting California’s communities and natural resources.

These statewide exercises are a critical part of preparing crews for the challenges of wildfire season and all-risk emergency response. Beyond wildland firefighting, crews may respond to search and rescue incidents, flood control operations, and other emergency situations when communities need help most.

Throughout the training, crews were tested on physical fitness, fire shelter deployment, line construction, teamwork, and operational readiness, while personnel also strengthened their skills within the Incident Command System (ICS). Every evolution was designed to build confidence, sharpen skills, and reinforce the teamwork essential to success on the fireline.

Training today. Ready tomorrow.
