🐶🚒 A floppy-eared resident of McCord Square Apartments found herself stuck on the wrong side of a second-floor balcony railing while her owners were away. Station 432 firefighters used a ground ladder to safely secure the pup and put her back in her apartment. Thanks to alert citizens and Mccordsville Police Department for helping bring this rescue to a happy ending! 🐾❤️

🚒🪜 Ladder 431 takes VTFD crews to new heights as firefighters train to elevate our response capabilities 🏢📸

Over the last week, Vernon Township Fire Department firefighters spent time on duty training with the newest addition to the fire department fleet, Ladder 431.

Our firefighters trained on setting up the aerial ladder at some of our taller buildings in our district, using the ladder to perform balcony rescues at a local apartment building, and pumping water through an engine into the ladder truck’s 100-foot-high waterway to apply water to fires in elevated or otherwise hard to reach locations.

As we continue to integrate Ladder 431 into service, residents can expect to see us training throughout Vernon Township and surrounding communities. Every building, parking lot, roadway, and access point presents unique challenges, and hands-on training helps ensure we're prepared when our community needs us most.

🦆🚒 Duck Rescue in Fortville! 🚒🦆

While animal rescues are no quacking matter, today’s call had a happy ending that was hard not to smile about.

Earlier today, Engine 431 was dispatched to the area of Bowesmont and Washington Streets in Fortville after a young resident with a big heart for wildlife heard several baby ducks chirping for help from the bottom of a storm drain. After discovering that nine ducklings had become trapped, she knew she needed some assistance and did exactly the right thing—she called her friendly neighborhood firefighters at Vernon Township Fire Department. 🚒

Engine 431 responded quickly and arrived ready to help. After locating the ducklings, firefighters carefully worked to access the storm drain and safely remove all nine feathered passengers. 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆

We’re happy to report that every duckling was successfully rescued and, with the help of our newest future firefighter, reunited with their very relieved momma duck. ❤️

While calls involving ducks may not be the first thing most people think of when they think of the fire service, helping our community comes in many forms. Whether it’s responding to fires, medical emergencies, vehicle crashes, or even animals in distress, we’re proud to be there when we’re needed.

Interestingly, this marks our second animal rescue of the week. Earlier this week, VTFD personnel rescued two dogs from a residential structure fire. 🐶🚒

A special thank you to the young lady who took the time to stop, investigate the chirping she heard, and call for help. Her compassion and quick action helped ensure that nine little ducklings made it safely back to their family.

🚒 RIT / Wide Area Search Training 🚒
Over the last three shifts, on-duty VTFD firefighters participated in Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) Wide Area Search Training as part of a countywide training initiative.
We would like to thank our neighbors Buck Creek Township Fire Department for hosting and leading this valuable training opportunity.
What is a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT)?
A Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) is a dedicated crew of firefighters assigned to stand by at structure fires. Their specific purpose is to be the “rescuers of the rescuer” and respond immediately if a firefighter becomes lost, trapped, injured, or otherwise in distress.
Why are RIT and Wide Area Search training important?
Locating a firefighter in distress inside a large building, such as a warehouse or factory, presents unique challenges. Longer travel distances, complex layouts, limited visibility, and numerous hazards make these incidents far more difficult than searching a typical residential home. It can take significant time and specialized skills to locate and remove a firefighter experiencing an emergency. Training like this allows firefighters to develop and practice these critical skills in a controlled environment.
Why is this training important to our community’s firefighters?
VTFD protects several warehouses within our district and regularly responds to assist in Greenfield and Buck Creek Township. While we hope to never face a situation where one of our own needs rescued, it is essential that we are prepared to respond effectively.
