🏠 STRUCTURAL DAMAGE RESPONSE | 6600 BLOCK OF CARROLL ROAD

At approximately 4:33 p.m. today, Vernon Township Fire Department, along with the Hancock County Tactical Rescue Team, responded to the 6600 block of Carroll Road in McCordsville for a reported vehicle into a building.

Engine 432 arrived on scene within seven minutes and confirmed that a van had struck an attached garage, causing significant structural damage and partial failure of an exterior wall. Following an initial assessment, crews determined there were no occupants trapped or in need of immediate rescue.

Due to the extent of the damage, Battalion Chief 403 requested the collapse rescue unit, staffed by Sugar Creek Township Fire Department as part of the Hancock County Tactical Rescue Team, continue to the scene. Tactical Rescue Team members assessed the damaged portion of the structure and determined what stabilization measures were necessary before occupants could safely re-enter the building.

The incident was stabilized, and all fire department units returned to service just over one hour after the initial dispatch.

We would like to thank our brothers and sisters with the Hancock County Tactical Rescue Team and Sugar Creek Township Fire Department for their assistance and expertise.

💚 VTFD GOES GREEN FOR KAMMY’S KAUSE 💚

You may notice Vernon Township firefighters looking a little greener than usual this August—and there’s a very special reason why.

This month, all VTFD members were issued lime green shirts in support of Kammy’s Kause, a local organization and community project that holds a special connection to two members of our own Vernon Township community.

Lime green is Kammy’s favorite color, and our members will proudly wear these shirts for the remainder of August—and every August moving forward—as a visible show of solidarity with Kammy’s Kause, the families it supports, and the incredible community that continues to rally behind its mission.

Being a community fire department means more than answering calls. It means standing alongside the people we serve, supporting our neighbors, and showing up for causes that make Vernon Township and the surrounding community stronger.

This August, VTFD proudly wears green. 💚🚒

🩸🚑 12 BLOOD DROPS. 11 PATIENTS. ONE YEAR. 🚑🩸

The 12 blood drops displayed on the back doors of Medic 432 represent something much bigger than numbers. They represent 12 units of Low Titer O+ Whole Blood administered to 11 patients here in Vernon Township and across Hancock County—11 patients facing catastrophic, life-threatening bleeding when every minute mattered.

When Vernon Township Fire Department launched our prehospital whole blood program nearly one year ago, we expected to administer approximately four units during our first year. We surpassed that expectation within the program’s first three months.

Thanks to the strong relationships we share with our mutual-aid partners, this lifesaving resource has traveled beyond Vernon Township. Our crews have brought blood directly to the sides of critically ill and injured patients in Greenfield, Buck Creek Township, and rural Hancock County.

The success of this program rests heavily on the EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, medical professionals, and community partners who worked to make prehospital blood possible in Hancock County.

But before a unit of blood can ever reach the back of Medic 432, someone has to donate it. ❤️

This date is especially meaningful to us as we celebrate the ONE-YEAR anniversary of bringing prehospital whole blood to Vernon Township and Hancock County. Over the past year, this lifesaving resource has been carried aboard Medic 432 and given directly to critically ill and injured patients when every minute counts.

Now, we’re asking our community to help us keep blood available for the next patient who needs it.

🌊🚒 Training Today. Ready Tomorrow. 🚒🌊

Rain or shine, B-shift was in the water today! Members of Station 432 took advantage of the rainy weather to preplan a large pond in their first-due area while putting their surface water rescue skills to work.

While Vernon Township is fortunate to have a relatively low risk for significant flooding, open water is all around us. Station 432’s response area alone includes approximately 28 retention ponds and two lakes—not to mention neighborhood pools, drainage areas, and other bodies of water throughout the township. When an emergency happens in or around the water, having properly trained and equipped rescuers matters.

Recently, members from all three VTFD shifts and both stations completed Surface Water Rescue Operations and Technician training hosted by the Greenfield Fire Territory. The course gave our firefighters additional training in water rescue techniques, victim removal, shore-based operations, and safely operating in an environment that presents challenges far different from our everyday fire and EMS responses.

Our friends at Greenfield also helped strengthen that capability by donating dry suits to VTFD. These suits provide our rescuers with protection from cold and potentially contaminated water while allowing them to safely train and operate when the call comes in. We greatly appreciate their continued partnership and support. 🤝🚒

Today’s training allowed Station 432’s rescue swimmers to take those recently developed skills and practice them in their own district—learning the pond, identifying access points, working with tethered rescuers, and practicing victim approaches and removals.

It takes a village to build a new capability. From firefighters giving their time to further their training, to neighboring departments sharing their knowledge and equipment, every piece helps us become better prepared to serve our community.

And while we train for the worst, we ask our residents to help us prevent it. Never leave children unattended around water, wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating or participating in water activities, and never enter the water to attempt a rescue unless you are trained and equipped to do so. Call 911 and get help moving immediately.

No matter the emergency—or where in Vernon Township it happens—our goal remains the same: be trained, be equipped, and be ready when you need us.

A-shift was out today putting up some “gentle reminders “ that school goes back in session this Thursday and it’s time to slow down!!! Speed racers will need to take it back to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, or you will get to meet our friends from the Mccordsville Police Department or Fortville Police Department.
