Last year, our community told us what school should be for our students. This year, together they are building the plan.

On Wednesday, August 26, the students who helped write our Community Vision sat down with the students who will help write our Community Strategic Plan. They shared what they learned over nine months at the table: how to speak up in a room full of adults, how to disagree well, and how to stay with the work when it moves slowly.

They learned it from people like Rosa Torres-Noriega, a district alumna and parent, and Lorena Alcayaga of the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula at Fiesta Gardens International School — two of the many Vision Design Team members who gave nine months to this work and spoke at our celebration in May.

Now three STAR Teams — Strategy Teams for Actions and Results — begin writing the plan around three focus areas drawn straight from that Vision:

Academic Excellence by Design
Real World Learning
Community Wellbeing

Every one of our 22 schools, Pre K - 8th, is represented.

Our EV charging stations are open to the public!

The City of San Mateo saw a need: residents who drive electric but don't have a way to charge at home. They asked whether the chargers at our school sites could be opened up. The district said yes.

Thank you to Mayor Adam Lorraine and Deputy Mayor Nicole Fernandez for bringing this forward, and our facilities team for making it happen.

Weekdays, 6–10 p.m. Weekends, 8 a.m.–10 p.m.
$0.40/kWh plus a $2.00 connection fee.

College and Career Exploration Teacher Tim Hilborn wants his students to be ready for what comes next in their academic journey. But when your classroom has no windows, outdated technology, and materials that have not kept pace with the careers students are actually preparing for, the space itself becomes a barrier to the very future you are trying to help them build. Add an overcrowded classroom to that, and the challenge is even greater.

Still, across SMFCSD's 22 schools, aging facilities tell a similar story, and this Thursday, June 25, at 5:30 PM, the Board of Trustees will consider placing a school improvement bond measure on the November ballot. Join us in person at 1170 Chess Drive, Foster City, or via Zoom. Public comment is open, and your voice matters.

You have heard from our students and teachers across our 22 schools. You have seen the windows that no longer let in light, the leaking ceilings, and the classrooms built decades ago that have not kept pace with today's learners. Last year, we went directly to our community with a survey — and our community responded.

90% of respondents said replacing leaky roofs and old windows is a top priority.
90% want updated fire alarms and emergency communication systems.
86% want modernized STEM classrooms and labs.

Now we are at the next step. On Thursday, June 25, at 5:30 PM, the Board of Trustees will consider placing a $498 million school improvement bond measure on the November 3 ballot at the District Office, 1170 Chess Drive, Foster City. The meeting is open to the public in person and via Zoom, and public comment will be open.

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Texas to announce what enslaved people had been denied for two and a half years: their freedom. That day, known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day, reminds us that true freedom requires knowledge, truth, and action.

SMFCSD joins communities across the nation in observing Juneteenth because knowing our history is the foundation of everything we teach.

Borel Middle School student Jacob does not need a facilities report to tell him what he sees every day. Sharing similar stories from our school communities, windows that no longer let light in. Classrooms with no windows at all. Ceilings that leak when it rains. And buildings that have been standing since the 1950s.

Over the past several weeks, we have been sharing stories from students, teachers, and staff across our schools. From PE teacher Mr. Kotani at Brewer Island to student body president Jonas at Beresford to teachers like Ms. Kim Lorton at Highlands and Ms. Laura Kendall at Cottage Grove. Each of them has shared something real about what it looks and feels like to learn and work in spaces that have not kept pace with the needs of our students.

Clouded windows, rotting wood, crumbling concrete, and classrooms that have become a distraction rather than a place of focus. These are not isolated stories, they are a shared reality across our campuses, and they are exactly what the 2026 Facilities Master Plan was designed to address.
Now we are at an important moment.
