East Central Indiana was hit hard this week and the rain continues to fall.

Historic flooding has left homes, neighborhoods, and roadways underwater throughout our region. Families who were safe and comfortable just days ago are now facing damaged homes, ruined belongings, and a long road toward recovery.

IAFF Local 4787 is asking our community to come together and help our neighbors.

We are currently accepting donations of:

• Cases of bottled water
• Non-perishable food items
• Large trash bags
• Cleaning supplies

Our firefighters have spent this week doing what we always do when our communities need us — showing up. Now we’re asking all of Hancock County to help us continue that work for the families dealing with what comes after the water goes down.

It may seem small, but when an entire community steps up, it adds up quickly.

Governor Mike Braun has declared a statewide disaster emergency due to the flooding, severe weather, tornadic activity and a derecho that impacted the state beginning on Aug. 11, 2026.

In response to this severe weather, the State Emergency Operations Center elevated the activation from Daily Operations (IV) to Emergency Conditions (III).

Over the last 48 hours, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, in collaboration with partner state agencies, has led the state’s response efforts.

- IDHS’ Office of Emergency Communications has deployed mobile radio towers.
- IDHS has deployed three recovery teams to Northwest Indiana to begin assessing damage, and an Incident Management Team to Franklin County to assist with the response efforts to the flooding.
- A number of shelters have been stood up throughout the state by the American Red Cross and other partners.
- The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has deployed boats and swift water rescue gear to flooded areas.
- The Indiana Department of Transportation, in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Correction, is actively removing debris and monitoring roadways for flooding. Preparations continue to be made as widespread flooding persists.
- The Indiana National Guard has been mobilized to assist Northwest Indiana and are also prepared to assist with evacuations throughout the state have been impacted by flooding.
- The state is continuing to monitor the power outages and is working with utility companies to remove any debris to ensure areas are accessible to be restored.

Here we go again.

Another storm is heading to Indiana. It'll drift southeast this afternoon. It was may have strong to severe wind gusts and possible hail.

These winds will be able to topple trees and power lines easier in areas that have received flooding rains these last few days.

Be careful while traveling.

Rising water. The National Weather Service forecasts a crest of 19.4 feet at 8 p.m. Thursday.

If you live in a low-lying area, please leave before roads flood. Lee's Camp, Johnson's Camp and Walnut Grove are known flood areas and residents there are strongly encouraged to evacuate now.

Access roads flood well before the crest. The Shelby County Swift Water Team is on standby.
