Fox Lake Fire Department

In 1859, William E. Smith was appointed the 1st fire warden for the Village of Fox Lake. This was the beginning. J.C. Davis was appointed to solicit volunteers.

Smith ordered all residences and businesses to have a ladder and two leather buckets to haul water and sand to aid in fighting fires. In 1870, the first fire engine was purchased for $250. At a village board meeting dated November 10, 1892 it was suggested that a fire company be organized for the purpose of having trained men to operate the engine. December 1, 1892, a No. 3 Fire Engine, 55 feet of

hose and 20 feet of suction hose were purchased for $750 from the Howell Pump and Fire Engine Company of Indianapolis. On August 14, 1893, a list of 33 volunteer members for the Fox Lake Fire Company was filed with the village clerk. The Fox Lake Fire Department was reorganized in 1914 with 40 members. Martin Doornek served as chief from 1914 to 1920. Later years found Stan Glish, Henry Ring, M.M. Stenzel, Herbert Rabehl and Jack Betz, in that order, at the helm. Chief Betz retired in December 1981 after putting in 33 years. He was succeeded by Jack Rabehl, son of Herbert Rabehl. Jack Rabehl retired in November 1996 and was succeeded by Darrell Pollesch who was chief until his retirement on December 31, 2000. Bill Frank took over as chief on January 1, 2001 and retired on December 31, 2013. Aaron Paul is the current chief. Fireman’s Park was purchased at the city limit edge and a community building was torn down and this land is now the site of Fox Lake’s Community Center, City Hall, and Fire Station. I don't know about your kids, but my kids are bouncing off the walls with cabin fever.
The City of Fox Lake is hosting a family friendly St Patrick's themed dance party. We will have a DJ, food, drinks, and a few activity tables. Bring the kids to dance away all of their winter energy! This is a kid friendly event, NO alcohol will be allowed.

As of 10am this morning, our new ambulance is officially approved to service Fox Lake and surrounding communites! Our EMS crew has spent countless hours getting the new rig stocked and road ready.
In December, Fox Lake ran 27 EMS calls.
In 2025, we ran 296 EMS calls.
What an amazing day to be a part of Fox Lake!

Earlier this month, FLFD took advantage of the newly formed ice to train on various ice rescue techniques. Members trained on both single and multiple rescuer techniques, as well as the utilization of our Rapid Deployment Craft (RDC).

As a reminder, no ice is ever 100% safe. If you choose to venture out, we encourage everyone to wear a float suit or life vest. Have ice picks readily available and keep a throw rope handy to assist others. Utilize a spud bar to check ice thickness. If you choose to fish alone, tell a reliable person where you plan to be and when you plan to return. If you're unfamiliar with a lake or the current ice conditions, seek out current ice reports before venturing out. Local bait shops, such as Fish Tales, are a valuable resource.

Our most recent training focused on aerial master stream operations and relay pumping. A big thank you to our mutual aid partners to the north for joining us and providing our members the opportunity to familiarize themselves with Quint 303. Other topics of discussion included apparatus positioning considerations and the utilization of Quint 303 for both above and below grade rescue situations.

The Markesan Fire Department responds with a ladder truck to much of our territory when requested through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS.)
