DPW: Hydrant Flushing Begins in June

FRAMINGHAM - The City of Framingham’s Water Division will begin its annual hydrant flushing program on Monday, June 1, 2026, as part of the City’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality drinking water and ensuring the continued reliability of the municipal water system.

The hydrant flushing program is expected to continue for approximately four to six weeks. flushing activities in designated areas will occur Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 30 p.m. The program will be conducted in phases to help minimize any potential impacts on water quality and service.

Hydrant flushing is an important part of routine water system maintenance. The process helps remove naturally occurring sediment from water mains, improves overall water quality, verifies the proper operation of hydrants, and helps maintain adequate flow for fire protection.

During flushing operations, residents may experience temporary reductions in water pressure and occasional discoloration of water caused by increased levels of dissolved iron in the system. While discolored water may appear unpleasant, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that it does not pose a public health risk.

The Water Division will closely monitor water quality and system pressure throughout the flushing process and will work to minimize disruptions to residents and businesses.

In most cases, residents do not need to take special precautions during the flushing program. However, hospitals, medical facilities, and businesses that rely on water for manufacturing or cleaning processes may wish to monitor their water quality and pressure more closely during this time.

Residents with questions or concerns regarding the hydrant flushing program may contact the City of Framingham Water Division at 508-532-6050 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.
