The City of Framingham will host a September 11th Remembrance Ceremony and Vigil on Friday, September 11, 2026, honoring the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, including the 17 people with ties to Framingham who lost their lives.

The outdoor ceremony will take place at the September 11th Living Memorial at Cushing Memorial Park on Dudley Road.

The ceremony will include solemn remarks, a reading of the names on the memorial, a prayer offering, and a presentation of the colors by the Framingham Fire and Police Departments.

Nearly 3,000 American flags will be placed on the lawn to represent those who lost their lives.

Volunteers are needed to place the flags on September 10 at 4 p.m. Those interested can email the public information officer at [email protected]

The silent vigil will begin at 7:58 a.m., with the first plane's takeoff, and include tribute times corresponding to the times each plane crashed.

The formal ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. and is expected to last approximately 40 minutes.
The City invites everyone to attend this memorial event.

Mayor Re-Nominates Debra Freed to Framingham Veterans Council

Mayor Charlie Sisitsky on August 7 re-nominated Debra Freed to serve on the City of Framingham’s seven-member Veterans Council.

Freed, a veteran and longtime advocate for the disability and Veterans communities, has been nominated to continue serving as a member representing District 8.

If approved by the Framingham City Council, at its meeting on Thursday, September 3, her new term would run through June 30, 2029.

Freed brings extensive knowledge and experience supporting Veterans, people with disabilities, and residents throughout Framingham. She is also a well-known Paralympian who has competed in events including bowling and pistol shooting.

The Veterans Council advises the City on matters affecting Framingham Veterans and works to support and advocate for the City’s veteran community.

Mayor Sisitsky’s nomination is subject to approval by the Framingham City Council. The Framingham City Council's appointment subcommittee approved the nomination last night and now the matter goes to the full 11-member City Council for a vote.

Thanks to everyone who turned out last night for the final summer concert sponsored by the Framingham Veterans Council and the City of Framingham at Veterans Memorial Park.

Performing was the Southeastern Massachusetts Community Concert Band.

Mayor Charlie Sisitsky, First Lady Robin Kaye, City Council Chair George King, and City Council Vice Chair Janet Leombruno stopped by the concert.

Thanks to the Framingham Veterans Council for organizing the two summer concerts, especially Vice Chair Charlie Rousseau.

Final Veterans Council summer concert is TONIGHT, August 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park (adjacent to the district courthouse).

All are welcome to attend.

As a mark of respect for the memory of Dolly Parton, and in accordance with a Presidential proclamation, Governor Maura T. Healey has ordered the United States of America flag and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings beginning at 6:00PM today, August 25, 2026, and continuing until sunset on September 1, 2026.

This gubernatorial order applies to:

1. The main or administration building of each public institution of the Commonwealth, e.g. town and city halls

2. Other state-owned or state-controlled buildings

3. All state military installations

-- August 23 in 1966.

On August 23, 1966, NASA’s Lunar Orbiter 1 captured the first photograph of Earth taken from lunar orbit.

The historic image showed Earth rising above the rugged surface of the Moon and demonstrated the remarkable technological achievements of the early American space program.

The mission was part of a series of Lunar Orbiter flights that mapped the Moon and helped identify potential landing sites for the Apollo missions. The spacecraft ultimately photographed 99% of the lunar surface.

Today, we remember the engineers, scientists, military personnel, and others whose work helped advance American exploration and technology.

Tuesday, August 25 at 5 p.m. is NEW PARTICIPANT day at the Framingham Callahan Center . Callahan Center is for all that are age 55 or older.

Think of the Callahan as a community center for adults 55+. From concerts, theater, games and fitness classes to social services, health and wellness programs, educational presentations and so much more, there really is something for everyone.

Come see for yourself at New Participant Day on Tuesday, August 25!

Tours of the Callahan begin at 5 PM, followed by a short presentation at 5:30 PM with members of our staff and a representative from the Friends of Callahan.

And there will be light refreshments and raffle prizes! New participants will be entered, and current participants who bring a new friend will be entered to win prizes too.
