On Friday, May 8th, the MSP Pipes and Drums were honored to play at the 37th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial service at the State House.

Fresh in our minds was our brother, Tpr. Kevin Trainor. Taken too soon, and died performing what he was sworn to do three years ago... protecting the public. Tpr. Trainor no doubt saved lives that fateful night, and will always be remembered as a hero.

To all of the families of the fallen, we see you, we salute you, we grieve with you. 💙

On Tuesday, the MSP Pipes & Drums stood tall as we honored one of our own. Lt. Ed Horton was our original Pipe Major and our loudest and proudest supporter. Even in retirement, we could feel Ed’s spirit encouraging the band.

A couple of weeks ago, Lt. Horton was hospitalized in New Hampshire with serious heart issues. As things worsened, he was transferred by Med Flight to Boston. Unfortunately he was not able to recover. Lt. Edward Horton was called home to God after losing his courageous battle.

The band turned out in full force to pay our respects and honor a longtime member of the MSP P&D family. The band played several tunes graveside then remained through the services. Once his family and friends departed the cemetery, the band stayed for one final goodbye salute.

Rest easy sir. We thank you for your service to our fair Commonwealth as well as being a driving force in the formative years of the band. You were a larger than life personality and we are all better for having known you.

We were deeply saddened to hear of the loss of one of the Vineyard's true native heroes, Sgt. Joel DeRoche of the Edgartown Police Department. A solo piper stood tall with members of the Martha's Vineyard MSP barracks, and all of the surrounding police, fire, EMS, and Sheriff's departments, to pay tribute to this amazing officer.

From Edgartown PD: "Sergeant DeRoche began his service with the department as a young traffic officer in the summer of 1992, returning as a Special Officer for summers 1993-96. In 1997, he was sworn in as a full-time police officer, embarking on a remarkable 28-year career defined by dedication, integrity, and quiet professionalism. Upon his retirement in 2025, he left behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.

More than his assignments, however, it was his character that defined him. When he wasn’t in the woods somewhere hunting or on the water fishing, he was deeply devoted to the Town of Edgartown and served our community with compassion, treating every person with dignity and respect. He carried a sense of humor that lightened difficult days and a steady presence that his fellow officers and this community came to rely upon."

Rest easy Sergeant, we have the watch from here. 💙

On a frigid January morning, some of our members braved the cold winds and freezing temperatures to motivate the 92nd RTT recruits on their class run through the streets and towns surrounding our academy.

Lt. Bossi held the beat on the bass drum while Drum Major Tpr. Guarino stood tall with the mace, as we played "The Blue Bells of Scotland" for the recruits while than ran by. The new Troopers are now in their field training phase, and we wish them the best of luck as they navigate the roads of the Commonwealth with their Trooper coaches.
