Frankenmuth Police Department

The Frankenmuth Police Department is warning residents about suspicious and transient work crews targeting neighborhoods with fraudulent driveway repair and chip-and-seal services.
How the scam works:
• Unannounced visits: They show up at your door unexpectedly.
• The "leftover" pitch: They claim to have leftover asphalt from another job and offer a very lowball price to use it up.
• Bait-and-switch pricing: Once the rushed job is finished, they aggressively demand much more money than was verbally agreed upon.
Major Red Flags:
• Legitimate contractors never show up unannounced to solicit work door-to-door.
• They refuse or fail to provide a written contract. Reputable professionals always use signed contracts to protect both parties.
• Demands for cash or immediate, high-pressure payment.
What you should do:
1. Do not engage with door-to-door paving solicitors.
2. Always insist on a detailed, written contract before any work begins.
3. Verify local licensing and credentials.
4. Report suspicious activity immediately to our non-emergency dispatch line (or dial 911 if you feel threatened).

BE AWARE of Receiving a Package that Requires you to Scan a QR Code! Don't SCAN!
The Delivery: You receive a mystery box or envelope you never ordered, often containing a cheap item like a ring, stickers, or a small electronic device.
The Hook: The package typically lacks any sender information or a return address.
The Bait: Inside is a prominent QR code or a card claiming you need to scan it to find out who sent the package, look up delivery details, or process a return.
The Payload: Once you scan the code with your phone, it redirects you to a fraudulent website. This site will either trick you into typing in sensitive banking credentials or quietly execute a drive-by download of malware to siphon data straight from your phone.
PROTECT YOURSELF:
Never scan unknown codes!
Keep or toss the merchandise.
Review phone permissions: Never grant application downloads, tracking permissions, or cookie access to unfamiliar websites prompted by a QR scan.
Monitor your money.
