DFI Acting Commissioner Justin M. Burse presented Jessica Southworth, Acting Bank Branch Manager, with the inaugural Charles A. Vice Leadership Award. The award is named after Charles A. Vice who is DFI’s longest-serving commissioner. The award is to be presented annually to a DFI employee who embodies the exemplary leadership that Vice displayed.

Do you know a Kentucky K-12 teacher who should be recognized for their commitment to teaching financial literacy? If so, they can be nominated for the 2023 Financial Literacy Teacher of the Year contest through the Jump$tart Coalition of Kentucky. There will be a $300 prize that can be used for financial literacy classroom materials and trainings. To nominate a teacher, visit www.kyjumpstart.org and click on “Contests.” The deadline to submit nominations is July 14.

Teachers can also find financial literacy resources on DFI’s website, KFI.ky.gov, by clicking on “Resources” and then “Teacher Resources.”

The Public Protection Cabinet and the Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) recently welcomed the North American Consumer Protection Investigators (NACPI) to Lexington. The 43rd annual conference brought together nearly 70 representatives of consumer protection agencies from 21 states, plus Washington D.C. and Canada. Presenters offered attendees training on techniques for investigating, managing and litigating consumer fraud cases. Juan Garrett of the Department of Insurance shared information on how his fraud division operates and general investigative techniques. As director of DFI’s Securities Division, Marni Gibson focused on stocks & bonds, and appeared on a panel discussion on oil and gas scams. Other topics included virtual currency investigations, phishing scams, Medicaid fraud, financial crimes against the elderly, and more.

The Kentucky Department of Financial Institutions celebrates the Kentucky Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy and all of those educators and organizations that promote financial literacy, during and all year long!

was started as Youth Financial Literacy Day by the National Endowment for Financial Education. The National Endowment for Financial Education brought it to the Jump$tart Coalition to promote among its 100+ Partners as Youth Financial Literacy Month and later, simply as Financial Literacy Month. Today, organizations across the country conduct events and initiatives throughout the month of April. Cheers to Financial Literacy Month 2022!
