On June 10th, coaches, parents, and players of the Frankfort High School JV and Varsity Volleyball teams participated in the Trash for Cash fundraiser, the first fundraising event for the team going into their 2023 season.

During that time, the team covered thirty miles of Franklin County in the Flat Creek, Polsgrove, Onan Bend, Dry Ridge, Flag Fork, Harp Pike, Goose Creek, and Harvieland areas. We were fortunate to experience beautiful and sunny weather, and along our route, we picked up over 45 bags of trash!

Did Your Farm Experience Wind Damage March 3rd?

If you have debris in your crop fields or pastures and/or fences damaged from trees, please document as best as possible in case there is future USDA assistance for storm debris removal.

Jimmy Chambers, Versailles USDA Farm Service Agency Executive Director, stresses “document, document, document”. He asks that anyone who has experienced recent wind damage to keep records and take pictures. Photos immediately after are ideal, if possible, but since many start cleaning up after an event (especially with livestock in the field) any after photos will help too (debris piles, cut stumps along repaired fences, etc). Also be sure to keep track of your time and equipment used if you did not hire a contractor for the cleanup & fence repairs.

If a farm structure was destroyed beyond repair, contact your Versailles USDA FSA office about low interest loans for replacement at 859-873-3411.

Check out the post below for information regarding storm debris disposal!

From Franklin County KY Solid Waste:

Residents can utilize a couple of drop off locations this week for storm debris and damaged items.

There are dumpsters at both Lakeview Park and the Evergreen Road Fire Station. The dumpsters are for items like fencing, gutters, broken outdoor furniture and toys, etc. No shingles/heavy construction debris or tires. *Anyone found dumping unacceptable items may be held liable for illegal dumping.*

Lakeview Park also has a brush pile - bring fallen limbs, trees, and brush here and place in pile, NOT in the dumpster. If it's too large for you to move, please contact a contractor. Residents who live on County maintained roads can call the Road Department at 502-875-8760 and get on the list for pickup - not applicable to those on State maintained roads or in the Country Club.

You can also use a voucher all week this week at the landfill. If you already have a voucher number, no need to sign up again - just use the same number. Never use the program? Register at www.franklincounty.ky.gov/trash-vouchers

If you live in the County and lost or had damage to either of your red trash/recycling carts, please contact CKY Hauling at 859-225-2521.

And remember, Spring Clean is next month, where we'll have dumpsters in various places throughout the County. This is just for damage due to the storm.

Any other questions, please call Brittany at 502-875-8751.

Did you know that the grant funds received from the State for litter pickup are your tax payer dollars? If we didn't have a problem with people throwing trash out the window of their vehicle, we could spend that money on other programs to better the Commonwealth!

01/30/2023

The average lifespan of a plastic shopping bag is just 12 minutes. Is that little bit of convenience worth the 1,000+ years these bags will stay in our environment? Many think not, and Mother Nature is right there with them. Plastic bags not only break recycling center equipment, but also can clog waterways and imitate food for animals. Where there's a will, there's a way - what do you say about getting rid of these environmental polluters for good, Frankfort?

Until we get to that point, you can recycle your bags at major retailers, like Kroger or Walmart. The Kroger Zero Hero program focuses on waste reduction throughout the store and the products sold. There's at least one bin at each store in Frankfort, and more than just the grocery bags can be included. You can recycle zip top bags, plastic overwrap (like on water bottle cases or diapers), cereal bags, and shipping materials (like bubble wrap and plastic mailers). Make sure that all flexible plastic being put into these containers is clean and dry. Kroger's collected plastic goes to companies that make park benches and picnic tables.

The 2023 Litter Cleanup sign ups will take place from February 13-17. The site will open at 9 AM on Monday the 13th, and close promptly at 4 on Friday the 17th. All groups that register must be based in Franklin County and provide the Solid Waste Coordinator with a valid W9 at the time of sign up. If your group participated in 2022, you are not eligible for this year at this time. The link to the site is here: https://forms.gle/6xCXCHYKmiN5nNJa6

The Litter Cleanup program (aka, Trash for Cash) has been around in some capacity for at least 10 years now in Franklin County. Non-profits, school groups, and churches are eligible to apply and pick-up litter on an assigned route in exchange for funds. In the past, groups have been able to earn up to $1500 for their efforts. All safety materials and bags are provided to each group.

01/06/2023

Vermicomposting - or composting with worms - is a fantastic way to reduce your waste headed to the landfill. Instead of a hot compost pile outside that uses bacteria and nature's decomposition helpers (bugs and fungi!), these wonderful invertebrates "eat" your fruit and veggie waste and what you're left with is vermicast (worm p**p) that is a great addition to your soil, primarily for indoor plants. Vermicast is a soil amendment that is typically higher in nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous than traditional compost; it also improves soil structure and increases water retention.

Each worm bin starts with about 1,000-2,500 worms which will self-regulate their population depending on the space and the amount of food offered. I feed our bins once a week, but have put off harvesting the vermicast for almost a year - so there's quite a bit packed in these 18 gallon totes. It'll get screened to remove the extra paper bits and small food chunks, and then be ready for use!

If you're interested in learning about vermicomposting, shoot us a message or comment below. We may be able to offer some kits to get started depending on interest.

Our Solid Waste Coordinator, Brittany Woodward, loves playing with worms! In this case, she is working on maintaining several of her "worm bins." These plastic totes, full of worms, are "adopted" by various classrooms throughout the school year. This helps the students learn about the composting process. It's just one of the ways that Franklin County helps to put Waste in its Place!
