"According to the newly released 2026 Keep America Beautiful National Litter Study, cigarette litter in the United States has declined an incredible 62% since 2020—proof that individual action, community engagement, cleanup efforts, and recycling initiatives are making a real difference."

Recycle your cigarette waste for FREE through TerraCycle!

Recycle your cigarette waste for FREE with TerraCycle! Just print a free shipping label, and mail your cigarette butts, filters, loose to***co, foil packaging, and rolling paper.

TerraCycle US sends these items to a specialized facility that recycles the paper and composts the to***co. Learn more here: https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/brigades/cigarette-waste-recycling

Why would we recycle our cigarette waste? Collecting and disposing of cigarette butts properly helps reduce litter, contamination in our waterways, and keeps chemicals out of the landfill.

Progress is progress! Litter on roadways and waterways has declined 34% 🙌

How do you personally help prevent litter in our community?

Our AmeriCorps educator, Christine, teaches about the negative impacts of litter as a proactive approach.

Our Trash 4 Cash program pays nonprofit/school groups to collect litter along 15 miles of county roads for a total of $1,500 😱

The application goes live every year in January on our website and social media, and stays open for two weeks. 25 groups are selected at random.

In 2027, the application will go live on January 25th ‼️Thank you to the KY Division of Waste Management for sponsoring this program!

Check out Capital City Museum's Civic Summer Camp! Franklin County and City of Frankfort staff will lead activities on June 17th for Waste Worker's Day 🙌🗑️🚛♻️

Campers will get to see the recycling and garbage trucks on Rouse Ave, learn about which items are recyclable in our community, and make upcycled thank-you cards for our waste workers!

Our half-day camps are back!

Looking for something fun and educational this summer? Sign up for one of Capital City Museum’s camp weeks! Each week is centered around a different theme that will help your child explore all that Frankfort has to offer.

June 15th-19th: Civics & Community - To celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we’ve partnered with the City of Frankfort to bring you this camp week themed around civic engagement! We’re teaching campers what it means to be proud of their community and how they can play an active role in making Frankfort a better place. Throughout the week, we will volunteer with local organizations, have conversations with community helpers, and explore the many forms of civic advocacy.

Each day, campers will journey to a different site in Franklin County to be instructed in a different art form. They’ll get to try their hand at a little bit of everything throughout the week, from watercolors to weaving, sculpting with clay, making origami figurines, and more!
