Kentucky conservation officers are sworn peace officers who enforce all laws of the commonwealth, with a primary focus on fishing, hunting, trapping, boating, and commercial uses of fish or wildlife. Conservation officers work tirelessly alongside our fisheries and wildlife professionals on private and public lands and waters to help restore, protect, and conserve fish and wildlife. Because our na

tive wildlife and fishes can’t speak up for themselves—neither in the wilds nor in a court of law—they depend on our vigilant watch-care. The Law Enforcement Division’s policing of commercial uses of wildlife and fish, helps to protect the delicate balance between conservation and sustainable use of these vital public resources. Conservation officers pursue those who violate Kentucky’s laws and thereby disregard the principles of fair chase and ethical stewardship --- the poachers whose illegal take of fish and wildlife steals opportunity from everyone who enjoys these creatures legally. During the Spring Turkey Season Sgt. Wells took a complaint from a concerned hunter in the 6th District. The complaint was regarding a landowner illegally baiting turkey. The concerned hunter did a craw check of his turkey and observed cracked corn and wheat seed. Through investigation Sgt. Wells located a bait site that was near the area where the concerned hunter harvested his turkey. On Saturday April 25, 2026, Warden’s Brace and Nason sat on the bait site that Sgt. Wells had documented and made contact with the landowner who was actively hunting over the bait he placed out. During the contact the landowner informed Warden’s a neighboring landowner was also hunting over cracked bait. The original landowner took the wardens to the neighboring property, and the Wardens observed another landowner hunting over bait. Both Landowners were cited for hunting turkeys over the placement of bait.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Game Warden Tibbetts’ family and to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is heartbroken to share that Game Warden Pilot Joshua Tibbetts died this morning in a plane crash in Avon, ME.

Game Warden Pilot Tibbetts served the people of Maine as a Maine Game Warden for 18 years, including the last three years as a pilot for Maine Warden Service. In that role, his specialized aviation work supported search and rescue, law enforcement, fisheries and wildlife conservation, and public safety across the state.

This is an incredibly difficult loss for his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Maine Warden Service. We ask the public to keep his loved ones, his fellow Game Wardens, and all those affected by this tragedy in their thoughts in the days ahead.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. The Department will cooperate fully with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

We are grateful for the emergency personnel who responded to the scene and for the support already being shown to the Maine Warden Service family.
