One year ago this past weekend, our airport was devastated by an EF-2 tornado. Today, we are pleased to report that construction of our 20 new t-hangars is progressing at a good rate! New concrete footers and pads have been poured, a base layer of asphalt was laid last week and hangar materials will be delivered soon. We are thankful for the crews who are working hard to rebuild our airport!

Be on the lookout for our next newsletter as we highlight Kentucky Emergency Management and the supporting agencies for their efforts and support during the historic eastern Kentucky flooding this past July!

In July, there was historic flooding in eastern Kentucky, and response efforts began immediately. Due to the damage, Governor Andy Beshear and Kentucky Emergency Management worked together to recruit every asset, including aircraft, in the region. KSP, the Kentucky National Guard, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, multiple search and rescue teams, West Virginia National Guard, and the Tennessee National Guard were deployed and began surveillance of the area from land, water, and air.

The response effort in eastern Kentucky included hoist rescues, survivor transports, and emergency supply distribution, but the use of aircraft in the region expanded beyond these efforts.

Using Foreword Looking Infrared and Daylight camera technology, KSP used helicopters multiple times to locate a missing Breathitt County woman.

"The Kentucky State Police Aircraft Branch was honored and humbled to assist in the aviation rescues in eastern Kentucky. It was a monumental effort from numerous aviation agencies, search and rescue organizations and police officers on the ground. At one point, there were nine helicopters operating in tandem within tight air space of each other," said Captain Brad Austin, Kentucky State Police Aircraft Support Branch.

Over 1400 rescues were made by first responders immediately following the historic flood.

We want to thank all of the first responder, Capital City Airport in Frankfort, and the Wendell H Ford Airport in Chavies, for assisting with search and rescue efforts.
