Frankfort Beach E. coli Advisory Update – September 4, 2026

Great news for Frankfort Beach users!

The City of Frankfort is pleased to report that follow-up water-quality testing conducted yesterday at Frankfort Beach showed a significant improvement in E. coli levels, with the latest sample measuring just 88 colonies per 100 mL, down from 488 colonies per 100 mL in the previous sample.

This favorable result is a strong indication that the elevated bacteria level was temporary and may have been associated with the significant rainfall and storm conditions experienced earlier this week.

Frankfort Beach has not historically experienced recurring elevated E. coli levels or ongoing water-quality concerns. This was the first high sample ever experienced at this beach. The City will continue to monitor the beach and will provide additional information as it becomes available.

We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation while the City worked through this temporary water-quality concern. The latest results are very encouraging, and we are pleased to see Frankfort Beach water quality returning to favorable levels.

Frankfort Beach E. coli Advisory – September 3, 2026

Recent water-quality testing at Frankfort Beach found E. coli levels of 488 colonies per 100 mL, resulting in a Level 2 Partial Body Contact Advisory.

Under this advisory, E. coli levels meet EGLE standards for wading, fishing, and boating; however, water contact above the waist is not advised at this time.

Frankfort Beach has not historically experienced elevated E. coli levels or recurring water-quality concerns. While the specific cause of the current elevated reading has not been determined, yesterday's significant rainfall and storm conditions may have contributed to the temporary increase.

According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), elevated E. coli levels can occur following significant rainfall when stormwater runoff carries bacteria and other material from surrounding land, streets, stormwater systems, wildlife areas, and other surfaces into lakes and other surface waters. Wildlife, including waterfowl, can also contribute to temporary increases in bacteria levels.

EGLE notes that beach water quality will often recover within a day or two following a rainfall-related increase in bacteria.

City officials are aware of the situation, and follow-up water samples will be collected this morning, September 3. Results from the additional sampling are expected Friday morning, September 4, 2026.

The City will continue to monitor the situation closely. Once the follow-up results are received, they will be made available to the public as soon as possible.

Until updated results are available, beach users are asked to follow the Level 2 Partial Body Contact Advisory and avoid water contact above the waist.

The City of Frankfort appreciates the public's cooperation and will provide an update as soon as additional testing information becomes available.

Due to limited CERT staffing, the ADA parking at the turnaround will open at 6:00pm. Until then the turnaround will be closed to parking.
